I visited Chiang Mai, Thailand and Ban Mai Sawan, a small village north of the city. It was amazing. The people were so nice and the city was nothing like Denver, at all. I went to an orphanage and loved on the kids there. I will do whatever it takes to go there again before I die.
How to visit chiang mai, thailand
How I did it: I went with my work for two whole months. I stayed at Mountain View, a cute little hotel just inside the Northern Gate. They had better rates for longer stays. I flew into Bangkok and then took a night bus to Chiang Mai. It was within walking distance or short song tao ride to pretty much everything.
Lessons & tips: I got pneumonia from a cold bug that went around, I went to the Ram hospital right near the Northern gate of the old city. Great care and a decent price (I had no insurance). Don't be afraid to go to the hospital if you're really sick, it's a safe place to go.
Resources: We used Golden Rule travel out of Texas for our plane tickets. They got us a great deal.

Went here in 2005.
Nestled in the Ping Valley among the hills of Northern Thailand and nicknamed ‘The Rose of the North’, Chiang Mai is the country’s second city and capital of the northern provinces, which were once collectively known as ‘Lanna’, or ‘land of a million rice fields’. The city is famed for its lavishly decorated temples, handicrafts such as woodcarvings and textiles, and lush landscapes in the surrounding hills, which are home to colorful hill tribes who have migrated south from Southern China and Tibet.
These days the city’s ancient monuments are interspersed with fashionable, five-star hotels and glitzy shopping malls, catering to the needs of locals and tourists alike.
Chiang Mai is hugely popular as a tourist destination, not only among foreigners but also Thais from different parts of the country, and the reasons are easy to see. Apart from the natural beauty of the region and its refreshing climate during the cool season, Northerners have different language, cuisine and culture to the rest of the country, exerting a fascinating attraction on all who visit.
