Doesn’t get much farther across the country than Seattle to Miami!
How to road trip across the country
How I did it: My friend decided to move to L.A and figured it was a good enough excuse to drive all the way there. We planned our route via museums, parks, friends houses to crash at, and historic cites (like Roswell, NM) that we'd like to visit.
We were sure to have a clear destination for each day and were sure to stop and check out tourist attractions (like the largest freestanding cross in the country, possibly the world.)
There are plenty of resources out there to help you plan your trip and be sure to bring your camera.
Lessons & tips: Be sure you stop and smell the flowers and look for museums, parks, and the like you'd want to visit and plan your route around them. Also eat at local diners and restaurants it's much more pleasing than dining at food chains along the way.
Resources: Our GPS was essential

most of my roadtrips begin and end in the midwest, and i’ve not gone further west, but i hope to sometime! i’d like to take a summer and just drive on the most scenic route, squiggling north and south on my way to the west coast _
but i’ve been on several extended roadtrips, out to virginia with my family, and then to new jersey with a friend, and up to michigan with that friend and another… and there’s something so fantastically fun about it. especially if you’ve got good friends and a car that’s not too cramped =p pets are fun to have along too!!
two of my friends are doing this as I type. I couldn’t join them but hope to do it one day. perhaps next summer?
JoeyPapi is on 43things for the first time in a while
I, with the help of friends along the way, took a couple months to see some of the country. i had no plans and just saw what i could see. my only goal was to visit friends in Portland, and also in Chicago and end up home.
this is my first entry, I’ll add more details later if possible
Okay, so I saw Elizabethtown this weekend and it frickin made me want to do this MORE than ever. I want to leave like TODAY and road trip. Well, not today. But I definitely want to do it before I head to grad school in the fall. And I need a buddy to do it with :)
Admittedly, I didn’t do it in one shot. The first trip I drove with some buddies in an RV to South Dakota (going past Chicago on the way), then last summer I traced Route 66 (flying into Chicago, renting a car, and flying home from LA). It’s well worth doing, especially if you do your homework ahead of time so you can put things like the Jolly Green Giant statue in Blue Earth, MN and sleeping in a concrete wigwam in Holbrook, AZ on the agenda. I mean, we stumbled upon Carhenge! You can’t get much more serendipidous than that!
