How to learn ajaxHow I did it: I read the book Bulletproof Ajax, but it wasn't until I watched the podcast "The Art of Code" that it started to make sense. I reread the first couple of chapters of the book again while typing up my own cheat sheet and now it makes sense. Resources: Bulletproof Ajax by Jeremy Keith - http://amzn.com/0321472667 |

How I did it: I used the Internet and read blogs. Experimenting with well known javascript libraries (such as Prototype and Scriptaculous). Took a while to learn how to create advanced functions but all the blogs out are very useful. Read how I did it…

I’m taking an AJAX course through a local community college this semester… It should be “interesting”, given that I’m simultaneously taking a JavaScript course (i.e. no JavaScript background, but familiar with XML and PHP). We’ll see how well this works.
spend any spare time at work on achieving this. I want to be seen as valuable, not just competent and pleasent.
And i began reading Ajax for dummies. It’s a nice book. I’dd deffinetly recommend it, but I found my self writing a few methods that I was using over and over. I couldn’t help thinking, “hey, wouldn’t it be cool to write my own collection of functions with my new understanding of xhr?” Unfortunetly the code became rather complex and buggy. So, no.. it wasn’t cool. Many days later I learned about a few java script ajax libraries such as prototype or spry, made by some very smart people. One problem though, what happens if I encounter problems, I mean, how could I debug that code ? I guess it’s a risk I’ll have to take. I don’t know ajax, but I understand how it works; I belive this is enough for us average mortals.
I’ve had this on my mind for a while but am just now starting to actually do it. Luckily my job fosters a learning environment so I’m picking up AJAX via yui (yahoo’s ui library) and other stuff for a java web app I’m working on and am excited since it will definately be the type of knowledge that will help me do my job better and make doing web apps outside of work more fun.
