Cheese is very hard to give up. Very hard. But I am sticking with it!
How I did it: The best way to succeed is to carefully plan how you are going to switch from dairy to your chosen alternative. There are certain things I will not even have a soy based substitute with, these things are: any type of cheese (cream cheese, sour cream, sliced cheese) and butters. The reason why I choose not to consume even the alternatives are because it is unnatural and my body is uncomfortable with this.
The easiest step was the make the switch to soy/almond milk. (There are some great rice milks as well) I made a list of all the various things I consumed with dairy and researched substitutes. i.e)
Ice Cream
Granola Bars
Cereals
Cream
Oatmeals... etc.
I find that researching what one wants to purchase BEFORE going to the grocery store can help with any accidental dairy dosages.
Lessons & tips: Read your labels and don't give up. Soon it will become second nature and your body which is your temple, will thank you.
Resources: Read every single label on every item

Dee-lish, and no dairy!

I have always had stomach issues. When I say always, I mean even to childhood. I never thought anything of it – my entire family has stomach issues. It seemed normal to me, because it was the norm.
Then it occurred to me – it’s not normal to go to the bathroom four or five times a day. I could go into more detail, but you don’t want me too. Trust me.
So a little research into IBS revealed that dairy is the likely culprit. I cut out the dairy a little over a week ago, and I feel GREAT! Really – my stomach has never felt better. Not just saying that – I mean never.
Had a soy cheese pizza tonight, and while it will never be confused for a slice from Ray’s Original in NYC, I satisfied my craving.
I’ll keep you posted.
Today I ate Milo (chocolate) icecream and I’m sorely regreting it now! My stomach hurts a lot, I feel like I’m going to throw up and it’s amazing how quickly my asthma has gotten worse!
Well, this will teach me for next time I’m thinking about how good icecream looks…
:-(
Okay, I’ll admit it… I had chocolate today! :-(
But the good news is that my dairy cravings are almost all gone! (It helps that I found a good brand of soy icecream!)
I’m trying though!
I worked out that I’m lactose intolerant a few months ago when I decided to go on a short term detox (no dairy, no sugar and no caffiene for two weeks) just to get me out of bad habits and clean out my system. During that two weeks I felt fantastic! Afterwards, I went to transition to a normal diet and discovered that dairy not only made my asthma much worse, but also made me sick to the stomach.
I switched to soy milk (I even found a brand that doesn’t suck!) and started up a relatively dairy free live, but unfortunately, easter made me give into temptation! To be honest, chocolate is a HUGE weakness (and the fact that there’s charity chocolate for sale at work is just a torture!)
My goal is to wean myself off the temptation of chocolate and be completely dairy free for at least a month. So far, I’m on day 3.
Wish me luck!
