I myself spent 5 years from ‘99 to ‘04 living/working there and would be more than happy to help anyone out with any advice or tips…
I visited in August 2005.. and let me tell you, it was quite an experience. My favorite must-see place was Xin Tian Di because of the overall “cleaner” atmosphere, the architecture, the restaurants, and the quaint shops. In most parts of Shanghai, people do not necessarily have a sense of “space..” Their space is your space.. and vice versa. Also, expect intense stares when you speak English.. or if you look remotely “western” or if you’re attractive. The locals are not ashamed of staring for long periods of time at you, even when you lock eyes with them. The roads are quite dusty, laundry is typically hung outside of dirt-crusted windows, and plenty of locals are off working diligently along the streets, selling fried dumplings, fried wings, and xiao long bao, etc. Just know that if they notice you’re a foreigner/from the West, they will use that as their opportunity to reap as much $$ from you when selling silks, ornate objects, etc.
