I have to call this goal complete. I can read biblical hebrew (with vowels) proficiently. It was easy. It took practice, but I had a good teacher and my classmates were a joy to be with. I practiced a lot on my own and it paid off.
I love this goal and am happy I did it! 5 months ago
My first language is Portuguese, which is very similar to Latin and, to some extent, to French. Even English, the one to stand a bit apart, was somewhat easy. But Hebrew is quite a challenge. “No” vowels, complete different letters and the writing is not what we are used to. At all. I’m still at that annoying level when you perceive yourself as completely stuck. I hope that changes within a year. 8 months ago
I’m not even Jewish, though whether I’m related to anyone who is Jewish is a complete mystery to me. I’m not sure if it matters. I want to learn Hebrew for the same reason I wanted to learn German: I like it. Seems like a cool challenge. I also want to learn Swedish, French, Sanskrit and maybe Chinese. I speak a bit of Spanish and I’m trying to polish my German, but hopefully I can work my way up to being multilingual. 8 months ago
I’m using Welcome to Hebrew as a self study course, it contains 30 lessons. At one lesson per week, I’ll be done in April 2013. Today I started lesson 1. 8 months ago
On vacation in the Galilee, “Israel”, I think this is a good start. I brought along a “learn it yourself” Arabic guide to learning Hebrew 9 months ago
