I managed to buy the perfect shelves at IKEA for only $6.99 each! It is the FABIAN shelf. The wall anchors were kind of a struggle, apparently there is a large beam right behind that wall anyway so I didn’t need them. My TP is up way high and they look faboooooo.
There are so many types of shelves to build, for so many purposes, with so many possible restraints, it’s a tough topic to narrow down at first.
How large is what you want to store? What are the functions of the shelving? Can you put holes into the walls, ceilings or floors where you want the shelving? Do you have to build it all yourself or can you get help? What tools do you have? What materials? Is there a budget?
I have this amazing 15-foot ceiling in my living room, and I fantasize about building an L-shaped, floor-to-ceiling tower in one corner. I dream that this tower will suddenly cure all my sotrage needs. . . or would it really just enable my pack-rat tendencies and excessive book-buying habit? Hmm.
I built some shelves out of cedar about ten years ago, and although they were functional and really, really pretty, they were too heavy to hang on the wall when filled with books. After having them on the floor for a year, I turned them into an ottoman.
