vex is back!

So-so  — 9 months ago

I’m spending more time at work (counting down the days till the project’s deadline…), therefore spending more time in front of my work computer. But I spend less time in front of my home computer, which is definitely an improvement.

I think turning off my computer in the evening helped a lot. Sadly, this was only possible by toning down my online experience: less IMing, less frivolous email forwarding, less Facebooking, less message boarding, and worst of all, less 43Ting. I had to unsubscribe from several people and it feels like letting go of dear friends. :’(

At least I’ve adapted to my crunch-mode work schedule, so I no longer feel like a frenzied squirrel running around in circles, trying to stay on top of things. I think a care package from my Mum (10-day supply of home-cooked frozen meals ;)) definitely helped. :D And just generally being kind to myself, scheduling mandatory “me” time, letting go of 1/3 of my to-do list…

Not worth it!

this was an okay goal, i guess, but i can think of much better things to think about.
Now i can walk away from the comp for longer than 10mins, lol.
my best friend doesn’t like it now though, coz it means less time spent with him, lol

New Year's resolutions...  — 1 year ago

I work as a computer programmer, so I already spend an unhealthy amount of time huddled in front of a computer. Why oh why do I insist on spending my free time in the same way?

I give up.  — 2 years ago

Unfortunately, too much of my life involves computers. I have done a good job of reading more books, but considering that my administrative work involves using a computer 85% of the time, and my other hobbies include “blogging” and “video games”, I’ve been doing a piss-poor job of avoiding the blasted things. I bought a DS for some of my video gaming, but that’s nothing more than a miniature computer, so that doesn’t count. I’m even planning to buy a new-to-me iBook in the near future to use for writing during NaNoWriMo ‘06.

So this goal was a miserable failure, but I’ve learned that what I need to focus on is not spending less time in front of the computer, but doing more things to balance out the time that I do use the computer, and to minimalize the strain I put on my body.

For instance, I bought a stability ball which I intend to use for sitting on when I’m at my computer or playing video games. I haven’t been very disciplined about it but I will work on that.

I have been trying to keep up with a regular workout routine. I lapsed during the weeks before and after my marriage, but I started it up again yesterday and hope to get back into the swing of things. Maybe I’ll actually take up contra-dancing again sometime soon.

I have been taking my vitamins daily, maintaining a healthy diet, eating breakfast every day, avoiding practices that I know are bad for me (like caffiene too late in the day, or food too close to bed time).

I’ve been reading books more often (the kind made with paper and ink), which is good at keeping eye strain away. I’ve been doing origami again, too, and plan to hopefully start doing beaded jewelry again at some point. I’m even playing non-computer games again, a little. I’m in a D&D game my roommate runs every other week, and hopefully my husband will start a game once we’ve got our own place and are somewhat settled in.

In all, I’ve been taking fairly good care of myself, and the only thing I need to do is find a way to prevent the damn neck and shoulder tension I seem to be cursed with. If I can do that, I think I’ll be in good shape.
