Unfortunately, too much of my life involves computers. I have done a good job of reading more books, but considering that my administrative work involves using a computer 85% of the time, and my other hobbies include “blogging” and “video games”, I’ve been doing a piss-poor job of avoiding the blasted things. I bought a DS for some of my video gaming, but that’s nothing more than a miniature computer, so that doesn’t count. I’m even planning to buy a new-to-me iBook in the near future to use for writing during NaNoWriMo ‘06.
So this goal was a miserable failure, but I’ve learned that what I need to focus on is not spending less time in front of the computer, but doing more things to balance out the time that I do use the computer, and to minimalize the strain I put on my body.
For instance, I bought a stability ball which I intend to use for sitting on when I’m at my computer or playing video games. I haven’t been very disciplined about it but I will work on that.
I have been trying to keep up with a regular workout routine. I lapsed during the weeks before and after my marriage, but I started it up again yesterday and hope to get back into the swing of things. Maybe I’ll actually take up contra-dancing again sometime soon.
I have been taking my vitamins daily, maintaining a healthy diet, eating breakfast every day, avoiding practices that I know are bad for me (like caffiene too late in the day, or food too close to bed time).
I’ve been reading books more often (the kind made with paper and ink), which is good at keeping eye strain away. I’ve been doing origami again, too, and plan to hopefully start doing beaded jewelry again at some point. I’m even playing non-computer games again, a little. I’m in a D&D game my roommate runs every other week, and hopefully my husband will start a game once we’ve got our own place and are somewhat settled in.
In all, I’ve been taking fairly good care of myself, and the only thing I need to do is find a way to prevent the damn neck and shoulder tension I seem to be cursed with. If I can do that, I think I’ll be in good shape.
