Well, I finally ran a timed mile on Tuesday, in 11:22. I’m fairly pleased with it. I’ve never tried to run one for speed so I’ve never finished a mile in less than 12 minutes.
I also timed how fast I run during my long runs, which came out to around 13:14 for a mile. It’s a lot slower than I thought it was. I figured I’d be dropping below 5 mph, especially towards the end, but I was thinking more along the lines of 12:30 miles, not 13+ =/
I need to come up with a new running schedule to mix in speed training rather than just long runs. It’s just that 3+ mile jogs are so relaxing that I’m never inclined to pick up the pace for a shorter run. I’d like to get in under 11 minutes when we do timed miles again at the start of the spring [rugby] season, which is in February.
How to run a mile in under 10 minutes
How I did it: I did it by having one person suggest to me that I run about 5 months ago. I started off with walk/run intervals at about 15 minutes. Over the next 5 months, sometimes I worked on my time, other times I worked on sprinting or endurance. Today I decided to go for it. I made sure to keep a .25 distance for every 2:30. If I was slightly behind I picked the speed up for about 30 seconds to a minute, if I felt like I needed a breather I slowed my speed but never took a break for a walk.
Lessons & tips:
- set the goal
- go for it
- walk when you need to
- you're racing yourself, not the time in which you need to achieve the goal

Right now, I would say I average about 16 min miles (tredmill) going at about 3.8 (slow, I know). I usually up the speed to 4.2-ish half way through. So yeah… 10 min miles by March (and I should be doing 3 miles each time).
Well I was already in school doing personal fitness. Was a tiny bit out of shape so my run was about 12 minutes. After two weeks of running the mile and getting in shape I bumped it down to about 9:40 :D
deustcheposts is vexed with monotony
I was very obese and could hardly run for 5 minutes continuously leave alone a mile.
But crude determination , help from Mario my fitness coach and now i can run 1 mile easily under 10 minutes.
So I haven’t run for a while and I am obviously out of shape before I was really close the to run under 10 min now I ran 11:12 which is not bad…but I want to get back in track.
Tonight I did it! And at first I didn’t want to get on the treadmill because these two really buff guys were running really fast and I felt very intimidated. But I bucked up and told myself “put your big girl pants on” and “you don’t have much time at the gym tonight, so you need to run and once you start there’s no way you can stop until you get there…” so I went for it. I ran one mile in 9 minutes and 57 seconds. It wasn’t pretty there towards the end but it was done and I KNOW that if I’ve done it once I can do it again.
Mmmm, victory is oh so sweet.
that’s right. everyday hustlin :)
my best time so far is 10:09…I haven’t worked on it in awhile but I can taste 9 something around the corner. ALSO that 10:09 time was done with no stopping for quick walks! Soon.
I got down to 10:48 and kinda stopped working on this. This is a subgoal to losing weight, not a main focus. It’s better for my major goal to make sure I’m running intervals on the treadmill for 30minutes vs wiping myself out for 1 mile. I will start working on this again soon.
my best time has been 10:05. so close. i’m not overweight i just don’t play sports so i’m really out of shape and i always get stitches in my sides which prevent me from running. one of my best guy friends is the best in the grade and he can run a mile 5:04. D;
