I was supposed to only go three but wound up looking for my friend, Sue, who was by herself on the river path in the dark – so instead ran 6 and a half. I was running fast because it was dark and a little creepy, even though I had my trusty Golden Retriever with me. I just felt so strong and happy! Like I never wanted to stop!
Funnily enough, Sue had just gone out another quarter mile and turned back, and somehow I missed seeing her. Finally I called her and she was back at the picnic table with the group the whole time! So then another friend said she’d come get me in her truck. I said nope, I wanted to run and so she ran out to run in with me. Beautiful night for a run!
This friend who’s the leader of our group will ALWAYS wait ‘til the last person has run in, or, more likely go out and find them and run in with them. I appreciate that about her so much!
When I got back to the picnic table it was so good to see my friends there, waiting. 6 years ago

This has been a hard week. I’m not sick, but just utterly exhausted and a little blue. I think the dark days and the cold are getting me down a little. All I’ve wanted to do is sleep and eat after work. My overly-full tummy has prevented my running. I did, however, manage to get my lazy rear-end to the gym once for cycling and weights. 6 years ago

It kept going off after ten minutes so I’m not totally sure of my distance. I did three sets of ten minutes at about 10 minute miles, but some warm-up and cool-down thrown in there. So then I just did another half mile for good measure. It’s not fun, but it beats running in the dark. 6 years ago

I’d been running a mile then walking a brief minute before repeating that pattern during my long runs. I’d had problems on and off with shin splints and horrible pain in my foot from Morton’s Neuroma. I also tended to wear out and slow down toward the end and would then switch to running only half miles before walking a minute.
Well, yesterday, I ran with a friend who was trying out what she called the Galloway method of running six minutes then walking one minute, and I found that to be really MUCH BETTER for me. I’d actually avoided running with this person as she’d been a bit of a fanatic (IMO) who’d repeatedly pushed herself too hard and wound up injured and miserable. Well, it turns out that she’s since learned her lesson from THAT and was a wealth of information for me of what NOT to do and what helps her.
The miles flew by easily! Even with stopping twice to chitchat on the trail with friends we passed, going to the restroom twice, stopping to massage my foot twice, we managed to finish the 18 (as far as she was going) in about four hours! I felt fantastic and sprinted to the mile marker with some runners who’d been waiting there! It was great!
I hugged my friend goodbye and continued on another mile out and back. For some reason “20 miles” seemed like an important distance to get under my belt before race day. I finished in well under 4 and a half hours (not sure exactly) then continued running and walking in a small loop until my husband finally arrived to pick me up! I ran just under 21 miles and felt like I actually had another 6 or so in me!
Also, my foot didn’t start hurting at the usual 6 or so miles out, but rather felt fine until 11 and a half miles! The pain came fast and hot and hard then, but as soon as I massaged it a few minutes I felt like I had a new foot. I told my friend I’d likely have to stop and massage it again every mile or two when the pain returned, but – miracle of miracles! – it felt FINE until four and a half miles later! I massaged it again and it was fine for the rest of my run! Could it be getting better? 6 years ago

Boy did I need that! My confidence and spirit were really lagging after that bad attempt at a long run last week! Besides the gorgeous weather and a great run, God brought some awesome, experienced marathoner friends to me who really encouraged and reassured me. One led a prayer for us all, since this was our final long run before the three week taper. I just feel so much peace and and positivity right now. I’m really thankful for my health and my supportive running group right now. 6 years ago

Last Friday I’d planned on doing a long run of at least 18 miles. Well, the good news is I learned a lot from that attempt. The bad news is every little thing seemed to go very wrong and I only ran about eight instead. I overslept and had a plane to Chicago to catch that afternoon, so that cut my run short from the get-go. I went (by myself – a mistake)) a different direction on an unfamiliar trail and it took me down secluded, creepy trails. My MP3 Player battery went dead about the time my shin splints started to scream at me. Menstrual cramps made breathing in deeply (especially sniffling) a sharp shooting pain in my lower back. No drinking fountains on this trail. My Morton’s Neuroma acted up and every step with that foot was like a red hot knife stabbing in it. I actually called my sister, intending to ask her to come pick me up, but she wasn’t there. When Hubby later commented how tough I was for not giving up, I conveniently left out that part. Anyway, This Saturday or Sunday I’ll do my last long run before my taper. I hope it will go better. I’m sure I’ll prepare and plan better. 6 years ago

Cold and rainy so I went to my new gym for the first time to run the treadmill. I wanted to run at least six (6-8) miles, but stopped after five. I absolutely don’t like treadmill running. All my miles were about 9 to 9 and 1/2 minute ones, though. Fast for me! I stopped in between each mile to stretch my tight calves and shins. 6 years ago

Wah, Wah….
Nothing seemed seriously wrong on this run but nothing really seemed right either. My shins hurt. I felt slightly feverish. My bladder felt weird when I ran. Not even one song on my MP3 Player made me want to run or even walk fast. My dog almost tripped me, so that made me extra cautious. Just a little off tonight, I guess. 6 years ago

First I ran a 5 and 1/2 mile loop of the hilly start and finish portion of the Rt 66 Marathon course. It wasn’t too bad on my fresh legs. We’‘l see how those hills feel after twenty-something miles on race day. Then I ran 12 and 1/2 miles along the River. Beautiful weather for running. Some pain, but I managed to finish strong in spite of it. It took me 4 hours and 5 minutes to go 18 miles. I feel really good.
Edited to add that I did stop several times to massage the ball of my right foot, and adjust my metatarsal support pad. I’m not sure how much it helped, but I’m doing better on running right through that stabbing pain, for longer periods of time. 6 years ago

BUT… I guess I’m still pretty stiff and banged up from the tumble I took on Monday. I only ran about a mile before calling it quits tonight. It was getting dark and I was also a little spooked to be out alone, too. Oh well. I’ll get my four in tomorrow at the river with my group and then make up the four I missed today on Friday (I hope… I have Parent/Teacher conferences before and after school that day…). Saturday, I WILL run 18-20 miles! Tomorrow I’m going to get advice and maybe some inserts from the running shoe store because of that stabbing pain I’ve had. 6 years ago

Running in the dark with a headlamp, alongside my Golden, Baloo, and Hubby, I tripped a little over a rock and called out to warn hubby, “Rock!” Then immediatly twisted my right ankle, pitched forward onto my left hip, then my left fore-arm. I rolled and (I think) wound up on my back somehow. Luckily I just got some scrapes and bruises and dirt on me. I got up and started to pass out, probably from stopping running so suddenly. Hubby made me walk until I felt better, but ‘til then I got an amazing light show in my eyeballs while I struggled to stay lucid. Then, off and running again… no worse for the wear and tear! My nose is INTACT! :-) 6 years ago

Didn’t run Friday as planned and only did 3 miles on Saturday, instead of my scheduled 7 to 8, as I was on Benedryl and a little woozy.
The good news is I’m feeling lots better and made up my milage tonight by running 7.6 hilly miles instead of my scheduled 3.
So far this virus seems to be getting better without settling in my lungs as all my most recent ones have tended to do (for about the last year). Yay!!! I’m praying I don’t miss anymore miles in my last seven weeks of training! 6 years ago

It was a good, fun workout, but I think I’ll still try to get “today’s” four road miles in tomorrow morning. I just don’t feel like it’s running when I’m hiking and climbing, mostly. Hubby and I brought the two Goldens and I broke in my new Trail Runners – “North Face Ultra 103 XCR” – very awesome shoes! I love them.
Bad news about my plans to do my first 25K Trail Race this weekend. My mom asked to come stay with me for the weekend and I don’t want to tell her no. I’m just thankful she’s feeling well enough to do so (She’s chronically ill and disabled). I’m disappointed about the trail race, but I know that taking care of my mom is the right choice. There’ll be other races. 6 years ago

I’m really off my scheduled training plan. Here’s what it says to do
Monday 3 miles
Tuesday 4 miles
Thursday 4 miles
Saturday 7-8 miles
Well, I’ll plan on doing the miles scheduled for Mon through Thursday, but SATURDAY, however I really want to run in the Flat Rock 25K while my hubby does the 50K.
25 kilometers is 15.5 miles and I’ve heard this is a tough, hilly, technical course. I won’t be trying to place, so I can take it a little easy (almost all hiking, hardly any running). I will however make a PR time (personal record) as it’s my first 25K. The people who are going are the best folks I know and I’m really getting more interested in trail races after helping to put on the one last weekend. 6 years ago

Bring Gu (or a salty snack)to have about every hour or so.
Wear sunscreen (Duh! Now that it’s cooler, starting my runs later means more sunshine. I can’t believe I let myself fry yesterday!)
Take Advil beforehand.
Get a running hat and use it.
Run a mile, walk NO MORE THAN about a minute.
Eat my flaxseed daily.
MP3 player tunes make it much easier!
Distract myself from pain and doubt.
Stretch before, after, and every few miles.
I can do this. 6 years ago

on Saturday at the river. Not sure how long it took me. I walked for a lot of it, as I experienced all kinds of new pains. I always expect some toe numbness (and a little pain)in my three littlest toes on my right foot around miles 5 and 6. Experience has taught that I can run right through it and it will always abate after awhile. Well, not yesterday! It got worse and the ball of that foot felt like a knife was beeing thrust into it with each step. When I wound up limping, trying not to whimper from the pain, I decided to take my mind off it by making friends with a really huge, cool dog (a black russian terrier – neat breed) and his person. I stood around talking to them for about 5 minutes then resumed walking slowly and it was better. This weird pain returned periodically during my run, so a couple of times I took off my shoe and massaged my foot and that seemed to help too. I’d love to know what causes that and if I can prevent it.
Well, my shins didn’t act up, but my hip and knee joints did. I’m wondering if my gait was affected from the foot pain and if that would account for the joint pain.
I started out running a mile and then walking about a minute before resuming running. I’d found on my previous 14-miler that the key is to only walk for a BIT, then resume running before my legs feel fully used to walking.
Toward the end of my run I could only manage to run for a half a mile before walking. It was hard. My dog, Baloo (a very fit joggy-doggy), was having trouble, too, and he only jog-walked the last 9 miles, as my husband had met me and given him to me, mid-run. I finished exhausted, depleted, and in pain, but a little proud, too. Also a little smarter about some do’s and don’t’s for my next long runs (I guess that’s what this about after all). I’ll put what I’ve learned in another post. 6 years ago

I couldn’t even run a mile tonight because of the pain (almost in tears). The pain subsided a bit when I slowed to a slow walk and it went away completely once I got home and rested my legs. My shins are still a little tender to the touch, though.
Wish I knew what caused this. I have new shoes (same brand, size, etc. as before), I may be dehydrated from some intestinal trouble, or maybe I started too fast tonight. I don’t know. I do know that I’m behind on my long run and missed two short runs this week. I’ve GOT to get going better on training! 6 years ago

I volunteered (basically my whole weekend) for a big trail race and yesterday wound up hiking (running a little) for about ten miles to mark trails. I did that and ran errands for the race from about 6:30 AM to 10:00 PM. I worked at the actual race today for 12 hours. I’m too pooped to pop and wonder about attempting my 16 miles tomorrow, maybe? The race was fun and seemed to be a great success. 6 years ago
