How to get a typewriter
How I did it: I looked online for old model typewriters. I didn't want an electric or electronic. I wanted REAL old school. They were like $400+, so I searched eBay and got a 1937 Remington Rand Portable Model 1 for $73!!! I was so happy! I bought ribbons online at mytypewriter.com and it all worked and I was ecstatic! I can now write poetry the same way I started out writing it!
Lessons & tips: Research different kinds of typewriters. You may want an original kind, an electric or an electronic - there IS a difference - do your homework. Choose what suits your needs/wants best and think about where you will be able to get supplies/replacement parts from in advance.
Resources: Search eBay! It's your best bet for a good price. Or go to
mytypewriter.com if you are willing to spend a bigger buck. You probably
have a better chance of getting good quality there anyway. Either way,
ordering supplies from mytypewriter.com is a good way to go. Fast
service and worth it.

after lamenting that i couldn’t afford a typewriter from ebay (the shipping alone would have killed me) we cleaned out our basement and lo and behold, there was an old, black, fantastic typewriter. you never know how things will turn out.
It previously belonged to an elderly aunt who had passed away. My mother displayed it in her home office for a while, as beat up and dirty as it was, before I eventually asked for it. I was then able to locate a vintage typewriter repair shop in Chicago, and six months and $250 later, I was the proud owner of a beautifully restored and fully-functioning typewriter dating back to 1920.
