I bought a dosa pan the last time I was at the indian grocery store. I am attempting sambar today: hopefully it goes well. :)

How I did it: i looked up simple recipes for curry and flatbread which required a lot of spices like coriander, cardamom and cumin, aquired the spices and cooked up some rice and vegan yogurt to go along with it. it was my first indian food ive cooked but id say it was worth it as a starting experience, and to inspire me to cook more often and stop being such a lazy bum in the kitchen. How I did it: My friend showed me a number of dishes, then I experimented on my own with a few really good cookbooks. Also tried some recipes I found on line. Having my friend around for tips was the most helpful though. Read how I did it…

Anita is going to relax...
I’m trying to go vegetarian, and also trying to eat healthier, so there are lots of Indian foods that I would love to learn how to cook. I could easily learn by asking my boyfriend’s mom for her recipes, buuut, I wann alearn on my own time, not by asking someone. But, it’s my new goal now.
fourpointo put my ALL in
i never cooked before because i always thought just cause i’m a girl doesn’t mean i should know how to cook. Now i realize how STUPID i was. My mom cooks everything for my whole family and i never once helped. This summer (for the first time) i am living away from home. I’m having a really hard time cause i can’t cook much and am learning the hard way (i’m a vegetarian). So, definitely once i get back home—i’m going to learn to cook EVERYTHING that my mom knows!! Knowing how to cook good food is a skill and not everyone can do that (my mom says .. and now i agree!!!). I’ll definitely help her out more and learn to cook once i get back. I really want to be able to take some responsibility and show her that i can be a caring daughter after all. =)
after much trial and error, for now i am satisfied with following items:
- naan
- aloo paratha (plain parathas are not at all a success. I don’t know if it is me not being able to make them as they should be or it is just that i don’t like plain parathas – i only tried stuffed parathas in a restaurant, never a plain one. And i din’t have any indian friend living nearby…)
Coconut chtney didn’t work out well, mainly because i don’t have th eright tools – raw cocnut is impossible to grind into a paste using regular foodprocessor. no wet/dry grinders available on the french market. thinking of the alternatives

I browsed around 43 things and came across Suzi_1’s link for Manjula’s kitchen. I went to her site and decided to make the first recipe that I saw. It happened to be for a dish called “Fruit Creme”. It’s not a very Indian style dish, but it was very delicious. Everyone loved it.
Well I had to cook in a emergency, as I like home made food and don’t like to eat junk and theyre wasn’t anything else…
So I just cooked it before you know it, although the onion could’ve been cooked more, it was o.k dish..

I give myself an overall of 6.5/10 as everyone else DID eat this without complaining whatsoever…
made a mediocre korma and half-baked but tasty chapatis. also some kickass chole and chittrani (rice with peas).

Just love it! Am pretty good but still rely on cookbooks. Want to be able to know regional specialities.
My best friend is from the Punjab region in Northern Indian, so she was very helpful in showing me a few dishes and getting the masalas right, maing chapatis, etc. I also got a few cookbooks to try out. My husband and I have loved the cuisine for years. An Indian restaurant was actually the first restaurant we went to when we first met, over ten years ago:) Now our favorite restaurant is an Indian all you can eat buffet. Its about the only place we eat out. I love being able to recreate a bit of it at home.
