become a godparent

I would love to be a godparent.

My best friend of 15 years recently asked me to be a godmother to her two children. Neither of us is very religious, and are looking for an equal alternative to “god parenting.” What do you have to do to make it legal? She just wants to make sure that if something ever happens to her, her wishes will be carried out, without question. Any info would be most helpful!!! Thank you!

I am godmother to several children, and I would consider it an honor, but also a big responsibility. Not so much because of money or anything, but mainly because of the spiritual support I feel I promised when I stood up for them at the baptism. I am supposed to pray for them, teach them, and encourage them in their spiritual growth. I never feel that I am doing a good job.
