I’ve been wanting to do freelance translation for a while, just to get extra money in the bank, and why not, maybe work for myself one day. I was referred to a great translation agency and I called them today – it took me six months to make the call! Anyway, they are interested in my skill set and there’s lots of work. So, I’m keeping my fingers crossed… hopefully this will work out!

Last month, I wrote a story for the alumni magazine. A lot of alumni from my school work with me (journalism is a very small industry), and co-workers were telling me about how they read it!
My friend works at one of the papers in the city and gave me the name of the travel editor. I wrote to her with a pitch for a story based on my trip to Chicago!
Even though I only have a few hours a day to do this..I feel like it’s coming along. This makes me feel so much better

This one is a “how to” article for an investigative journalism magazine! Probably no pay because the association is run by volunteers but great exposure and helps further the profession!
Published a Christmas-related story in December, which got some rave reviews (I won’t post the link here b/c it’s got my name on it and I want to remain totally anonymous)
Also submitted a story for the alumni magazine just this morning!
Got 2 more on the backburner!
This goal is moving!
finishing a story for the alumni magazine due Friday morning.
zzzz
but working toward my goal!
I made $225 for a graphic design thingy I did a year ago. That was my first freelance job. I haven’t done anything since because of classes. I’d like to do more freelancing to pay for school stuff and to gain more experience.
instinct33 is just chillin
It takes up too much of my time and energy… And since I’m working a day job, it’s pretty much like I’m working two jobs at the same time.. Very draining. I’d rather take the time and establish my businesses..
But from my experience, if I was still a fresh graduate (it hasn’t been that long, but what the hey) I would probably have spent half a year just freelancing instead of getting a job. It’s an awesome lifestyle. You get to stay up late, sleep in the morning, work anywhere you want (Starbucks is a godsend!) and all sorts of other benefits. The FreelanceSwitch book is an awesome resource for this; you can check it out at freelanceswitch.com/book Hey, at least I can say I’ve done this!
Because I’m in the habit of seeking out new clients and taking a light workload of freelancing jobs. So what else is there to do to consider this accomplished? I never wanted to do this full-time, at least not now… I’m nowhere near disciplined enough to set my own schedule and stay on task like that. Maybe down the road when I (if I) “get my act together” as they say.
I pitched an amazing story at work. Took 3 months worth of freedom of information requests. Now they tell me I can’t work on it b/c I’ve taken on a different job. (I’m a writer now, no longer researcher).
Note to everyone: Keep all the good stories to freelance.
