Hopefully I can do at least 2 sketches a month
How I did it: I go in waves of 'anxiety' and 'pretty cool' which seem to sequence in with my use of written journals and sketch journals respectively.
Resources: I like a good 6x6 coil notebook and a gel roller pen that fits and clips inside the coils
I used to draw cartoons of myself. I haven’t sketched anything since grad school. I need to get back into that because I feel like I’m wasting my talent. Last summer in Providence we saw a really awesome little collection of art in a coffee shop. I’d love to do something like that. But I need to practice. Eventually it would be cool to see if I could show my work somewhere but we have to start with baby steps here and for me that means breaking out the sketch book again.

Bought a new sketch book. Hoping to fill it up with my imagination.

I’ve been making sketches of toys I want to make all morning long. I found a little old sketch book that has about 100 pages left so I’ll use that up until I can buy a new one.

I picked up my pencil and got down to it. I drew one of my boyfriend that turned out a lot better than I thought it would and now I’m wanting to give it to him. Maybe. I kind of want to keep it for myself.
That was the last blank sheet in my current sketch book. I’ll have to get another one. Right now I’m working on the ones I haven’t finished. My boyfriend is always telling me that I shouldn’t start a sketch without finishing it. I owe him for that one. I have a good bit of them finished which is a big deal for me because if you go through my old sketch books you’ll find that I’ve only finished about 1/5 of them.
I’m excited. I think I’ll take a sketching class in spring to hone my skills.

Its something i used to do, and the trick is that art begets art and the more i throw myself into headfirst, the better the chances that something will work.
Especially in sketching.
There are often moments of ‘uh… this is awful’ but then i just add and add and add until it makes sense or at least makes me happy.
Keeping it in my bag and adding as i go, great for bus riding etc… but i get less reading done… hm.
I want to make a big sketched ‘vision board’ type poster on some large-ass watercolour paper to put in my room.
I think it will be kick ass.
This is a good time for me to do that too.. to refine my vision of the future.
Soon we’ll start looking for job postings.. yay!

i have to pull my sketch book out on breaks from class/when i’m waiting for the bus/on the bus/more often!
Its good to have a place to put ideas, but its not really feeling like a sketch book yet.

I bought a sketchbook on sunday, because its time to get back my art.
I have to start again and find my way through new media, new ideas for this whole new place and this whole new phase of my life.
I’m starting to wonder at what my skills really are… what do i DO? I’m surrounded by amazing people who are skilled musicians in many cases.
I haven’t been able to get work (yet!?) and so i have a lot of time to bum around and i need to come up with a routine for myself… a weekly schedule etc.
Sounds pretty artistic and open minded doesn’t it! Well… art needs practice too!

I’ll be in NYC next week and have reserved a space at the Dr. Sketchy event in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, at The Lucky Cat. I’ve enjoyed several of these events in Austin. Sketching, burlesque, and beer. What’s not to like? Learn more about it at: www.drsketchy.com
