Charity brings me joy. There is so much hopelessness & apathy in the world, and Charity is a light in the darkness. People working together for the things that matter to them to make a change in the world. I want to do as much as I can for all sorts of charity.

Room to Read is a dynamic, results-oriented organization. Since our inception as a non-profit entity in 2000, we have impacted the lives of over 755,000 children by:

• Constructing 197 schools
• Establishing over 2,565 libraries
• Publishing 77 new local language children’s titles representing over 600,000 books
• Donating over 1.1 million English language children’s books
• Establishing 60 computer labs and 25 language labs
• Funding over 1,757 long-term scholarships for girls

I have seen personally the result of the goodwill of other people. I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer about 7 months ago, and lost about 2 months of work to undergo surgery and radiation.
The outreach was phenomenal. I have never cried so much in my life from pure gratitude. People I knew and didn’t know all donated so much time, energy, finances and even just well wishes and prayers… It was truly overwhelming.
I want to help someone else, if for the simple reason of giving hope where sometimes they might not see any.

I have hosted a few charity events, and although they are very stressful and time consuming, I have always had a great time. The biggest one I helped with was a brest cancer benefit for a friend, we were able to raise over $12,000 for her. Also the one I put the most time into was a Car Show for Charity that happened last August. I had a lot of fun with that one. If anyone has questions or needs some help with a benefit, I am more than willing to help.

Doing something for a charity, any charity, gives you a glow inside, far better than donating money to charities. It is something I’m trying to teach my daughter, and it seems that she’s learning. Yesterday we spent 16 hours sewing and bagging tracksuits for AIDS orphans (winter is approaching where we are) – and she not only was kept busy trimming threads off the tracksuits and folding and bagging them (she isn’t old enough to sew really), she enjoyed herself. in the car on the way home at 3.30am, she told me that she enjoyed herself, and that she had a warm feeling inside thinking of all the kids that would be warm over winter. I don’t know the final total of tracksuits made during the 24 hour track-a-thon, but I do know that it exceeded the 1125 tracksuit target to break the record. 89 of those came from our table during the 16 hours we were there (couldn’t make the last few hours – too tired, and when you’re too tired you make mistakes when you sew – better to leave it to the people who are a little fresher!)

Work keeps me occupied and I have a home to manage during weekends. If only I could learn to make time to participate in a cause! I donate to World Vision but deep in my heart I know I can do better.
