How to raise money for charity by beckyjules

"Two consecutive Christmases I spent 24hours on the streets raising money for homeless people and it was fantastic!"

How I did it: After the terrible earthquakes that hit Indonesia in 2005, I decided that there must be a way to show support for all the thousands of people left homeless and cold.

So, through the British Red Cross and ActionAid, I organised two Big Sleep Out events. The first sleep out was in my small-ish hometown. We spent 24 hours on the street, offering lollies to the Christmas shoppers and asking for small change donations. People were so supportive! We were even brought a homemade curry late at night for our dinner! The nightlife brought a new bunch of people to us, very eager to part with their cash, and even sing us some Christmas tunes!

The Big Sleep Out 06 was a bigger event in Southampton city centre. There were more of us sleeping out this time, and we met and chatted to some people for whom this life was a dialy reality. The local radio and paper gave us an interview, and the police kept an eye out for us too. Once again people were generous and we were even given free biscuits, bought drinks and chips, viisted by a singing Santa claus and one man even left his mates and joined us for a few hours!

In total over the two events, we have raised £2700 and it felt good!

Lessons & tips:

  • If it's a big, public event, decide on your charity carefully and contact them about your plans. They will be able to give you advice about your local rep. and how best to begin your plans. And they will be really supportive and enthusiastic!
  • Choose a cause that resonates or is relevant for you.
  • Write a jazzy press release and contact the local media. Try to set up a newspaper article and a radio interview.
  • Get lots of friends on board!
  • Try to get sponsorship - for example, we visited an outdoor pursuits shop and got a quantity of survival kit bags for a reduced rate!

Resources: If people can't support you in person, set up a Just Giving page for online donations - this helped me out loads!

    Two tins out there now 1 month ago

    Out of ten places asked to take a tin only two have agreed. However I have three more to go back to on Monday as their managers were not in yesterday.

    Today I will write letters to send to churches, schools and shops asking for support or donations of money or items to raffle/tombol. I will also write to local press.

    Once I got my speech sorted I did not feel as scared to go in and ask – one guy though he said no to a tin did give me a small donation(every penny counts). Feel quite energised and slightly more confident now!

    I don’t want to raise money for charity or donate every once in a while, I want to make it a life long habit. I am currently building a web community for people with the same aspiration. I have been (loosely) planning it for almost a year and now it is time to start. Its not up yet but it will be in the next two weeks.(did you hear that self TWO WEEKS!)= 4-30-09

    now so there is no going back. My heart is in my mouth as I think of the mammoth task facing me now. Ah well if i fall flat on my face any money raised will still go to the charity!

    There will be a lot less time for sitting here on 43things and feeling sorry for myself and watching all the amazing people on here living their amazing lives and doing such amazing things!
