This only happened to me once, 20 years ago. Four of us were flying from Columbia, South Carolina, where we had just finished basic training, to San Antonio for medic school. We had to change not just planes but airlines in Atlanta, and we had to run in our dress uniforms at top speed from one end of the building to the other. For me that meant run in a skirt and heels. The gates were as far apart as they could be. But they had held the plane for us, and they shut the hatch as soon as we were on. If this happened today I think I would just not show up, and see what adventures would happen from taking a later flight. But at the time, it was the Army, and we were scared of being late.
