Losing 3 nil against a much better team paled into insignificance today.
One of the kids in the team buried his mother last week, and somehow losing a game of football doesn’t seem like such a big deal.
The team signed a card & game him a rose called “Loving Memory”.
Still the team played well, infact their best game of the season.

I had never coached a boys Soccer team before, but had a lot of fun doing it. They were 7- 8 year olds and you could see their soccer skills coming our at an early age. They were an awesome bunch of kids and they always came off the field with a smile on theri faces whether or not we won or lost.

I’ve decided to keep track of my soccer coaching here:

Ran the 2nd training session with mixed results.
What worked well:
1. Playing 1 touch. The players had to think ahead & played much smarter.
2. Passing around cones.
What I need to improve on:
1. Use the older siblings to co-coach rather than participate & take over.

The planning paid off and all the kids had a good time.
I kept it fun and light. Interestingly, the players are keen to get their positions, but I thought I will wait until we start working out who goes where.

Organised for this Thursday. Now to get planned for it without being a control freak.

Including the coaches jacket – it’s all feeling real now.
I have lots of ideas – I have to keep reminding myself that it’s all about the kids having a fun time, hopefully they can have fun & win games too!

I had a look on the net for a useful site & found footy4kids which is full of excellent ideas for budding soccer coaches.

...But, guilty admission: I like playing more than coaching.

thats what i would say. i want to start out with getting a license to coach, either with fifa or the us soccer federation. i am a student of the game, it is too bad god did not give me the athletic ability to keep up with my mind during a game. i really want to teach the game as it should be known to american players as i feel that we as a nation are relitively young in the beautiful game.
