How I did it: I applied for a grant and made all other arrangements at the last minute. I was really lucky it all worked out, because I was close to having no place to stay (I ended up living in Jerusalem). I ended up spending 18 days in Israel researching and looking at the land and the people. Read how I did it…
How I did it: I signed up for a Taglit Birthright trip with a few friends, and we organized a trip we could all get on. A couple months later we were all boarding a plane to Tel Aviv Read how I did it…

I applied to go to Israel with “Israel Outdoors- Israel by foot” throught Taglit Birthright. Hopefully I’ll be going this summer. I really want to go in May so that I can be a camp councilor this summer, but the Israel by foot trips are only offered in jun and July thus far, so I might have to be a camp councilor locally at the YMCA and just ask for 10 days off, but have that be my only time off for the entire summer… We’ll see. I’m excited though!
I found out a while back that the trip was canceled by the sponsoring organization. Don’t know when the next opportunity to go will be.

I am not sure when I will do this. I will try to aim for Spring Break, but it will probably be in January of next year.
I think this won’t happen for awhile. I will be vacationing with friends or my husband alternating each year. This year is a friend year (Italy). Earlier this year I went to South Korea and Hawaii with my husband and last year we went to Spain for our pre-wedding honeymoon. (I’m not a travel snob – I never left the country before a few years ago – I earned these trips.) In any case, I have this year’s vacation planned. My husband says that we have to go to Palestine before Israel because Palestine won’t let you in if you have an Israeli passport stamp. So, we either wait until the passport has one spot left or we go Palestine first. This will be a long wait.

Found a couple of resources where instead of just visiting as a tourist I could actual go and work there for 5 months (more or less depending on the program). I got super excited about this when I heard about it. It’s really hard to explain to someone who’s not Jewish or has never been in IL why it’s so magical.
Still the programs start at 3700$ USD, that’s not including insurance, airfare and spending money for when I get there, because I won’t actually be making any money working. I think that this is more like a 2012 plan that sounds like it’s going to end up being something like 10 grand.
Then again, I’d like to be saving for my downpayment at that point, so I don’t know what my priorities will be.
I sent in the paperwork with my check yesterday! My parents are loaning me the money and I’ll pay them back in a couple of months. This way I won’t wipe out my savings account. Woohoo!

It seems that the next time to register is in the Spring. There’s a 300$ deposit that you have to put down to show that you’re serious about going. That and I would have to get my passport before then. So if I start saving 30$ a week in January I’ll have the required savings by March. Then I can continue adding to my Vacation fund to be able to have some spending money for the trip itself.
I’m a girl with a plan!
