I did this on a recent trip. I knew very few words, other than what you might pick up on TV or something. The first few days were pretty much reliant on a lame phrase book and gesturing. Within a few weeks, we were able to have very simple conversations consisting of more than just requests related to food, lodging, or transportation. I was sorry to go home, my proficiency was really increasing. I’m sorry to say I’ve already lost a great deal of what I picked up due to the lack of opportunities to practice.
