I have had really cheap vodka in Russia. In a campground, with lots of Eastern Europeans. My best memory of drinking vodka with Russians didn’t happen in Russia, but in New Zealand. It was a great experience. Teaching the guys to play poker while drinking vodka (I still don’t like it), and excellent Russian tea.
Great times.

Many years ago, just after the end of the cold war, I drank home made vodka with 5 Russian pilots, long story, don’t ask. They spoke no English and I spoke no Russian, but being pilots we had an understanding. The vodka was nasty, but we didn’t care, we chased it with a spoonfuls of spam. I don’t know which was worse, the spam or the vodka. We laughed, exchanged stories and trinkets and had a really good time. Then we staggered our separate ways and I never met them again. I have always wanted to drink vodka in Russia ever since, obviously I would pay for the good stuff now.
