How to learn AJAX style programming

How I did it: Reading several online tutorials and breaking several examples. A relatively healthy understanding of Javascript definitely helps. I also recommend trying to work it in to projects that could benefit from it from a usability stand point.
Lessons & tips: Read online tutorials and only use AJAX where practicle.

Ever since I first saw gmail and google suggest I thought this new (then acronymnless) thing was just the kick in the ass the web needed. I tried a few times to make it all work before the groovy new javascript libraries were available with no joy.
Now I’m using jQuery for a few things and have a real understanding of how and where I can use AJAX on a real live project I’m working on.
I just purchased jQuery in Action which is a clean easy to read explanation of jQuery. So far I’ve been able to perform some minor javascript magic but no actual AJAX.

I recommend reading about great JavaScript libraries, which really make Ajax development easier. My favourite is jQuery, it’s amazing.

I have been working with a lot of the different Javascript frameworks including jQuery, Prototype, script.aculo.us, Ext JS, and others.
I am currently working on an online application for viewing photos on Flickr.

I’ve been using Ajax on and off for a while, and I first learnt it from W3Schools Ajax tutorial, using PHP, but I’m now using Ruby on Rails so I’m gonna start learning RJS (Rails JavaScript).
