Reading Germinal….here’s a line from the main character, Etienne, who is fomenting socialist revolution in a French mine in the late 1800s. After getting a “fresh” picture of the bad state of their lives from Etienne, a woman in the household cries out to God for help.
Etienne’s response : “Why do you need a good God and his paradise to make you happy? Haven’t you got it in your power to make yourselves happy on earth?”
