i’ve been to a bathhouse before, but never to one with baths fed by natural hot springs. i’d definitely love to try that!

How I did it: well, i've always wanted to go to an onsen if/when i ever came to japan, so when i stayed at a ryokan in kyoto as part of a holiday course and found out there was an onsen there, i decided i needed to do it.i'm not even exactly sure if it was an onsen or not, since technically, to be classified an "onsen", the water needs to come from a natural hot spring...but in any case, it was a hot bath. and it was full of naked ladies. XDso my frien… Read how I did it…

ok so I’m definitely not someone who is into the whole lets get naked in public thing but this was awesome. I went to the Oedo Onsen in Odaiba and it was only 2,827 yen which is under $29. The experience was relaxing. I did this by myself knowing no one so that may have added or hindered my experience. I loved it and would do it again!
for 2008 I am limiting myself to five goals. This one is one of the ones I would like to do at a future date but am not going to focus on this year

I spent a couple of days in Hakone, about a two hour train ride south of Tokyo, during my trip to Japan last winter. This is a resort area in the mountains known for its natural hot springs. Visiting the onsens was one of the activities we looked forward to the most during our trip to Japan, and it was definitely worth it. Although you come out of the water smelling slightly of sulfur, the experience is amazingly relaxing and supposedly the minerals in the water are good for your health. We found excellent and popular public baths in the area complete with resting rooms and a scenic environment…
There is only one time to go… in winter in a place where it’s snowing. Maaaaaan was it awesome. The water is stinking hot, but you can jump out in thew snow. totally worth it. After there were there massage chairs and a little japanese cafe. Definately worth it. Soooo relaxing.
I was pretty nervous about my first visit, being an American and not wanting to be one who is rude or disrespectful of the customs, but it ended up being very relaxing and I wish I could go to a few more now. The place I went was actually pretty small and unpopulated, but it made for a good first-exposure to the practice.
I went to the onsen in Odaiba a few days ago, and although it was quite expensive it was well worth it! You get to choose a yukata and obi to wear around the facility. Inside it’s decorated so you feel like you’re outside wandering round a market at night. Brilliant!
