skatelandThe Pub

One way I think I shall do this is to study at a pub or cafe. It’s got tables at an appropriate hieght and there isn’t the wind facter which makes the park useless. 13 months ago

TheCatsMotherTo help with this goal...

...I’ve bought some planters, compost and seeds and I’m going to start a little container garden in my boring little back garden. The garden is tiny, not at all private and is just a pile of gravel really, so not very inspiring at the moment. The house is rented and I intend to move this year so I don’t want to plant anything in the actual ground and have to leave it there. I’m also going to buy a few really huge planters and put trees in them to act as a sort of screen between me and my nosey and very weird/scary neighbour. He never goes outside in his garden (luckily) but he always runs to his window when he hears my back door open and that kind of puts me off going out in mine.

I can’t wait to get out of that neighbourhood, but until I can I’m going to do my best to make my stay more enjoyable. I quite fancy pottering about back there looking after the flowers and attracting a bit more wildlife and just relaxing. 14 months ago

TheCatsMotherNo more excuses

I have just bought myself a good quality all-weather jacket and have repaired my sturdy walking boots and tonight I am going walking whatever the weather. There is nowhere to hike near me (and I currently don’t have a car) so I’m just going to brisk-walk around the safe and well-lit areas of my town and get my legs used to the exercise and my lungs used to the cold fresh air. Take that lazy-legs! 15 months ago

TheCatsMotherA small start.

I’ve noticed over the last few months that I have become such a recluse at the weekends that sometimes my door never opens and I remain shut away. I don’t know if this is through laziness or contentment but either way it can’t be healthy. I’m going to start small and make sure that every weekend I get up early and go for a long walk in the fresh air to collect the morning papers from a far away newsagents (approx a 3 mile round trip). I also find that I get more done with my day if I get washed and dressed as soon as I wake up rather than having a lazy weekend start. 16 months ago

TheCatsMotherI used to be so outdoorsy

Last year the only real time I spent outside was when I was exercising. I didn’t even use the garden (due in part to a nosy/weird neighbour situation) and only went out when the jungle out there needed to be tamed. This year I’m going to make more effort because I really miss witnessing first-hand the changing of the seasons and miss that sense of wellbeing the outdoor life gives me. I’ve let my world shrink so much that I now pretty much just shuttle between home, work and the supermarket! 16 months ago

JoshI only...

...was able to do 40 miles (round trip) of the 72 mile Smoky section of the AT. We hiked it over three days. Very high winds (60-80 mph) and snow made it difficult to hike at the speeds we wanted to hike at, and we decided it was wise to turn around about 20 miles into the trail. The original intent was to thru hike the 72 mile trail, though. I feel like we made the best decision, but it was also disappointing to not hike everything we intended on hiking, as well. 16 months ago

JoshI am...

...hiking the 72 mile section of the Appalachian Trail that runs through Smokey Mountain National Park this month. It’s part of the training that I am doing for the AT as a whole. Bill, a good friend of mine is going to do this section with me. We are leaving Christmas day to drive to the trail head and plan to start hiking Monday, 12/26/2011. The goal is to finish up the hike Thursday evening (12/29/2011) and then to drive to the ocean/beach in Charleston, South Carolina for the New Years holiday weekend.

This trip will also allow me to test out some of the ultralight backpacking gear that I have bought in the last few months, as well as test out the dehydrated meals that I’m planning on making for the AT. 17 months ago

JoshWalked...

...a 12 mile trail yesterday. Afterwards, I drove by several other trail heads in the Hoosier National Forest and picked up some trail maps. Now I have four other trails to hike soon ranging from 6 miles to 16 miles. Good times. 18 months ago
