Well, I’ve been to Guatemala before. My family is from there. I’ve to all the major places in the past, including Tikal. This time I’m going to see Guatemala appreciate it from a photography perspectve. I want to be able to take Guatemala anywhere and everywhere I go. My brother is going to be on vacation for the entire month of November. I can’t wait to really get to know my entire family out there. I look forward to visiting Guatemala, God willing.

I went with my native Guatemalen friend who showed me “his Guatemala” which was the absolute best way I can imagine to see a country. Stayed in the western highlands region, 9 days. Flew into Guatemala city, drove to San Lucas (traditional village in Lake Atitlan area) kayaked and swam in Lake Atitlan, boated over to touristy Panajachel, stayed in a hospedaje for $15/ night. Daytripped to Santiago Atitlan, also very traditional, took a chicken bus through the hills, ended in Antigua – a gringo tourist spot with beautiful architecture and colors, nightlife and the best Spanish language schools. We didn’t go to Tikal or Flores, but if I ever go again, I’d go there.
The US dollar is still strong there ($1 = 7.45 quetzales and rt airfare was $420 (low season).
We went down to visit some neighbors who lived there for a few years. They took us around. Tikal you need to do for sure! Antigua was awesome too. You have to make sure you are with some one who knows what they are doing, or else it would be way scary!
Antigua, Chichicastenango, Tikal..etc.
I would recommend everyone to go there (exept Guatemala City maybe, even our local tour guide didn’t dare to leave the van). To volenteer work or just to learn spanish. Or to experience the Maya-culture on close hold:) Once in a lifetime experience for me:)
I’m giving up this quest for now. My life is moving in a direction that does not include extravagant trips out of the country. My plans on studying abroad are also no longer in line and my commitment to becoming a marrow donor needs me to be available at all times (not nessarily time wise but because I’ll be in an area where I could contract something that would restrict me from donating as it most certainly would with just giving blood). When I settle down career wise and have mastered some Spanish I’ll reconsider this goal. Hasta luego…
Great country… good people. Go check out Panajachel, Tikal, Chichicastananga, and Antigua for sure. Affordable trip for anyone in the US and a wonderful life experience…
Spent 8 weeks there doing volunteer work with GVI and exploring the country. Best thing I’ve done with my life. It’s a beautiful country with rainforests, black sand beaches, volcanoes, etc, etc.
Just got back from Guatemala-what an amazing country. I loved the people, the scenery, everything! I really want to go back and see some of the sights I missed-Lake Atitlan and Tikal. One of my favorite memories was walking through Antigua at night (not the safest, make sure you are in a group) and sitting in the walled courtyards or on a rooftop terrace sipping drinks and enjoying the music!
