Gecko glue exploits mussel power! 1 year ago

“I envision that adhesive tapes made out of geckel could be used to replace sutures for wound closure, and may also be useful as a water-resistant adhesive for bandages and drug-delivery patches,” said Professor Phillip Messersmith from Northwestern University in Evanston, near Chicago, US.

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/6295138.stm

One housewife, Suad Hassan, 30, claimed she had been attacked by one of the badgers as she slept.
“My husband hurried to shoot it but it was as swift as a deer,” she said. “It is the size of a dog but his head is like a monkey,” she told AFP.

Maybe she should tell us the size of his(*) as well! LOL

resource relief for Darfur 1 year ago

probably not news to many, but I thought it was interesting:

Discovery of an underground lake in Northern Darfur may help to end conflict in the region.

I really wish I’d gone into geology sometimes.

A huge underground lake has been found in Sudan’s Darfur region, scientists say, which they believe could help end the conflict in the arid region.

The team used radar data to find the ancient lake, which was 30,750 km2 – the size of Lake Erie in North America – the 10th largest lake in the world.

Magic in Market Harborough 1 year ago

Of course, we’re all familiar with Market Harborough, the small market town in south Leicestershire, whose name somehow feels as though it’s an anagram of Morten Harket.

Well here is a report about an art auction held there last week. What a great story!

Indians use condoms as toys! 1 year ago

India is struggling to prevent millions of condoms from being made into toys or sold as balloons.

The contraceptives were distributed free to control the country’s population and restrict the Aids virus.

    advertisement
However, they are being used instead to strengthen roads, provide extra waterproofing for houses and to carry water.

Health activists said millions of condoms were melted down for their latex and made into toys. Others were dyed and sold as balloons.

In rural areas, villagers used them as water containers. India’s soldiers covered their gun barrels with condoms as protection against dust.

Only a quarter of about 1.5 billion condoms made each year were “properly utilised”, the activists said.

Health planners are trying to control India’s population of more than 1.2 billion. In 2005 the HIV epidemic afflicted more than 5.7 million people. Of the 891 million condoms meant to be handed out free, most were used by road contractors, who mixed them with concrete and tar to create a smooth surface. The Link:

(That explains why the population is 1.1 billion!Condoms are not in the drawers when they need them!)

It's worth it.... 2 years ago

but in my family we’re very bad about not sharing news with everyone. We often tell some of the family and think that we’ve told them all, only to find out later that a few got left out. It’s never nice when that happens, so I’ve been really good these last 5 years or so to be sure that I send out emails and make phone calls to everyone in the family when I need to share something new. It’s been wonderfully calm since I started to pay more attention to who I’ve told things to.
