I did so with students on a school trip about 5 years ago. It was a hoot :)

Be prepared to scoff it down as the resident carabineri will make sure NOBODY eats on those steps! A real pity – couldn’t imagine a much nicer spot in Rome to eat gelati! Go for it – maybe the will get used to it!

Suggesting Gelato flavour? 3 years ago

I am haunted for the Scene in “Rome Holiday” ever since I was little. However I would like try some “real Italian” gelato flavour once I get to the Spanish Step. Anyone has good suggestion?

even for an Italian girl like me i’s always a thrill to be up there, eat fabulous gelato and do some wonderful people-watching :D

I felt very fabulous and Italian. The only requirement is to make sure you wear cute shoes :-)

The beautiful view on the steps while I ate my banana gelato!

The Spanish Steps in Rome are amazing—so many people from all over the world in one place not doing anything but sitting, talking, watching, enjoying, being. And of course gelato is one of the seven wonders of the western world. The best part is to hang out at the steps at night when the local teens come to hang out, play guitar, smoke cigarettes, drink wine, and sing American pop songs with much feeling; many of them don’t understand a word of what they are singing, but that only adds to the charm.
