How to learn how to use a sewing machine

Untitled 13 months ago

My mum brought a sewing machine last week and I really want to learn how to use it. I want to be able to make a patchwork quilt and also some clothes/pillows and stuff

Yay! 17 months ago

I can’t wait to make all of my oversized concert shirts finally wearable!

Laura came round 2 years ago

and she showed me the basics. I know how to thread it up and use it properly now. Now all I need to do is make some stuff using it!

Laura’s had to cancel Thursday coz she’s going away for a long weekend. Hopefully reschedule for next week.

My friend Laura.. 2 years ago

is coming round Thursday evening and is gonna teach me how to thread up my machine and do some basic sewing. I’m so excited! Can’t wait to start making some stuff and letting my creativity run wild!

I did Textiles for GCSE at school, but can vaguely remember how to thread the machine.

I think the part I’ll have problems with is measuring, pinning and cutting the fabric. I don’t even know what to make yet! Any ideas?

WOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! 3 years ago

I finally got off my duff (well, I actually had to sit on it, but you know what I’m saying…) and did this. I sat down for two hours and figured it all out AND I made a pair of lovely purple curtains for my bathroom. I know it’s only the first step. I certainly couldn’t make a full on dress at this point, but now that I see it’s not so hard as it seems, I’m definitely willing to try!

Workin on it 3 years ago

My (awesome) guy got me a sewing machine for my birthday. It does a zillion things so I wont be done with this Thing for a while yet.

No, really... 3 years ago

where the heck to you start on this one? I’ve had a sewing machine sitting here for almost a year now. I’ve looked over the getting started manual, but I still don’t feel comfortable just getting started. What if I break it??? I’ve had three people promise to show me how to do it, but I’ve learned long ago not to rely on other people to get things done for me. I’m going to have to just take an entire day and sit down and mess with things until I figure it out. Spring Break is coming… :D I need new curtains in my bathroom.

for the record, i don't sew "properly" 3 years ago

but i make all the halloween costumes for my kids (more forgiving than clothes they’d have to wear on a daily basis, though if my son wants to wear his dragon costume to preschool that’d be okay with me.)

i made some of the window treatments in my house—it’s a lot cheaper than buying them, and i keep them simple anyway, beacuse i’m not into big frilly things.

i bought 11 yards of fabric one time to make a swag and the woman behind the cutting counter asked me what i was making. when i told her i was makign a window treatment she said “wow, you must sew a lot!” i replied “in fact, i don’t, but it’s kind of like driving a car.” she nodded, saying that it was the type of thing that once you know how to do, you never forget. so i had to clarify “no, you just press the pedal and aim to go in a straight line.”

and i hem a lot of my clothes, beacuse at 5’1” i frequently have to buy petite sizes, then hem them. :(
