    more than one.

    Barrels acquired! 8 months ago

I managed to get two 55 gallon metal drums that formerly contained former mineral oil. They were $12 each, but they’re in brand new shape. The place were I got them had some plastic barrels, too, but they formerly contained some sort of volatile organic compound. Not the kind of stuff I would want to use for watering the garden.

    Rain barrels 8 months ago

The city where I live normally has discounted rainwater collection barrels, but they seem to be out right now. Should I go buy something else that was purpose-made as a rainwater collection barrel, or re-use something. Where would I be able to find such a container?

Wish I had a garden too! 14 months ago

Good luck with the rainwater tank! I am really interested in rain gardens and composting….I know our city has grants and scholarships for rain barrels-have you checked that out yet in your neck of the woods? Let me know how it goes!

    the reality.. . . 14 months ago

the reality is: i know that some of the garden failed because i didn’t water it enough! But it hardly rained at all this summer, so i would have had to supplement with ALOT of watering. That defeats the whole purpose of cheaper food, when you’re paying a super high water bill. i mean, yes, the food i grow i know is clean, organic, etc. the mother-in-laws addiction to the swimming pool made the bill outrageous most of the summer anyway, she would have passed out upon seeing the bill had i properly watered the garden. all of this just cements our need for a rain barrel or two! we have a perfect set up with the garden lieing directing behind the garage, all i would have to do it run the eve’s spout right into the bucket, and wham bam – free water right from the sky!

too far away 15 months ago

the only barrels on craigslist (still) are over the ohio\mich line. i don’t think i’m willing to drive all that way for barrels. i need to put the word out at the racetrack. someone out that way MUST have some barrels for me.

    craigs list 16 months ago

i am going to keep checking craigs list for plastic barrels, i can make the spicket attachment myself, no need to pay $200 for something i can make myself!!

Best thing we ever did! 17 months ago

At the moment it’s not plumbed in to the house for things like toilet flushing, but I do have it hooked up to the washing machine. Our clothes are lovely after being washed in rainwater and I’m using much less laundry detergent. The little water consumption graph on our rates notice is also looking much healthier now that the washing machine’s not sucking down all that water from the mains.

We also use it was washing the car, washing the dog, all that outdoor cleaning type of thing. The gray water from the washing machine also helps to water the garden.

We’re thinking of eventually putting a second tank in at the front of the house that can be plumbed in for the toilet. There’s still a huge amount of roof area that we’re not currently harvesting water from.
