On last labor day, I was fishing off the coast of San Diego, chasing Yellow-fin Tuna. We came upon a school of a tuna feeding on a bait ball (tightly schooled anchovies) as we drifted up to them the tuna suddenly disappeared, just vanished. A very unusual thing for Yellow-fin. The skipper started shouting that something was rising from down deep. Suddenly an adult blue whale rose straight up, mouth open, out of the water and scooped up the entire bait ball. As it slid back, it squeezed the water out of it mouth sending water shooting everywhere. It then rose back to the surface , laying there along side our boat. We were on an 85 foot boat and the whale was almost as long as it. The whale laid there for several minutes, we watch it just swim around the boat and then stand on it head and disappeared into the deep. Through out the day we saw blues moving all around the area, but never again anything like that.
I’ve seen lots of whale at sea, nothing has ever come close to this!!!

I found a website that offers a seasonal tour when they are off the coast of Cali. I’ll have to do this some weekend next year or the year after maybe.

I think this would be an incredible experience. Besides, have you every known anyone that has actually seen one?
