elephant dung paper making in mwlaugange elephant sanctuary kenya 1 month ago

so yeah not really your bog standard recycled paper, but its such a good idea, the grass fibres left in the elephant dung bind everything together to create a card like sheet – made of dried out elephant dung, PVA glue and water as well as being pretty cool, it was funny to see just how squeemish some of the guys on our team were, lol
definatly recomend it to people – not necessarily going to africa to do it but i got to keep my elephant poo book, tis very cool -

wasn’t shaped quite right to get all 4 pieces I need, so going to have to redo this one more time to get the last piece.

waiting to dry 9 months ago

I’ve done the first round of mix and dry, and now am on round two. I’ve set it outside to dry, and hopefully it will be shaped right to make the 4 pieces I need, or I might need to rewet and make it 1 more time. but I am almost done with this.

I’ve been making a heavy card paper to put into a tri fold screen I have that has space for 12 6×4 pictures, since the pictures I have are 3×5, I needed something behind them, so I am making my own paper.

I bought a screen at walmart, that was and adjustable / 2 screens connected together kind, and seperated them. Then I took some newspaper, careful to avoid the colored pieces, and blended them up with a mixer, and added some green acrylic paint, and a touch of orange to tone down the green. Blended this all up and spread it out to dry so the acrylic would set. After a few days, I blend it aggain, throw in some dried flower petals from my primrose to add some character, and then laid it on the spring. I didn’t really know how to make paper, so I just found I can spread the pulp around by using the spray nozzel on my sink. once the pulp is thinish and uniform, I let it drip over the sink, then just leave the screen sitting around for a few days to dry, then it is stiff and something like construction paper in thickness, but much prettier. Each batch makes 4 6×4, and I’ve done it twice, so I just have to do this one more time to finish my screen, then I will mark this as done.

Yay! My fiance bought me a paper making kit for Christmas! It has a mesh grid in a wood frame, an envelope shaper thingy if you want to make envelopes, some other bits and an instruction book.
It smells nice like eucalyptus. Now to put the call out to all my relatives for unwanted paper.

I made the paper for my wedding invitations with recycled paper from my shredder, red Rit dye to color the pulp pink, iridescent glitter and a store-bought deckle. It took a few days. First, I soaked the shredded paper in a bucket of water overnight. This is a project that is best done near the bathtub or a large sink. I took handfuls of the shredded paper and put them in a craft-designated blender with more water to make a slurry. I did this a bunch of times. You will probably end up with a lot of pulp like I did. You also probably don’t need that much. (Make sure if you use household paper that the little plastic windows on the envelopes are not included in your mix. They wrap around the blades of the electric blender and can wear out the motor, and when they end up in your paper, they create holes because they do not allow the pulp to stick together.) Next, I dyed the pulp with Rit dye, which is a cellulose dye, for the wood/cotton based paper I was making. To make the paper, I used a rubbermaid bin filled half with water. I put 2 cups of pulp in the bin, sloshed it around, dipped the frame into the water, lifted it out, let it drain, flipped the paper onto a piece of sheeting on a cutting board, with the screen on the top and used a wrung out sponge to soak up excess water.(This only works if your screen is completely removeable, like mine. If it is attached the the frame you will have to carefully use a sponge to soak up excess water.) I layered the paper with cut up pieces of cotton sheeting, as I did not want to purchase couching supplies. Afterwards, I ironed it, because i’m impatient. Have fun!!!!1
