My parents just decided to go to Grand Cayman and I’m invited along. One of the must do things there, is going to this place called Sting Ray City!! So if all goes well then at some point between December 5-12 I will get this done!!!
How to swim with stingrays
How I did it: When I went on a cruise a couple years ago, one of the places we went to was the Cayman Islands. At Stingray City, I got to go snorkeling with wild stingrays. That sounded really scary to think of swimming with wild animals, but the guides told us that the stingrays were used to people going in that certain area and they knew we would feed them. When we got out there, there were floating buckets of dead squid that you could feed to the stingrays. The stingrays would swim across your shoulder and suck on it. It was so weird but it was an amazing experience I'll never forget!

I went on a excursion while on a cruise to the Cayman Islands. We took a catamaran to a sand bar and jump in the water with the stingrays. The guides had squid for us to feed the stingrays. The stingrays don’t have teeth, they just suck the food out of your hand. It’s really cool. I even held one and kissed it on the tip of it’s nose.
During a vacation to Myrtle beach, my daughter and I went out to the beach early one morning before the crowds. I carried her out into the tide, splashing her against the incoming waves. After a great big wave that almost sent us toppling, I regained my composure, glanced at the water, and noticed to our left four stingrays darting toward us. When they got a little closer (about 3 ft.), they darted out to the right and disappeared under the waves.
I have found from my trips to the beach that early morning (before the crowds) is the best time if you are hoping to have any interaction with marine life. We were able to catch crabs and even had the chance to rescue a beached jellyfish.
I’ve done it twice, both times in Grand Cayman. I would suggest doing it there. The stingrays still have their stingers but they love people because the fisherman throw the stingrays their bait. It’s only for the daring souls :) and don’t be surprised if your tour guides swim up behind you and grab your leg to freak you out! Stingrays really are beautiful creatures and they’re very sweet if they’re used to people being around.
Like many others, I was able to swim with the rays while in the Cayman Islands. I had been talking to some people who had done it and they said that it was pretty scary. I couldn’t imagine how it could be, so I went in totally fearless!
But it was sort of scary at first. They’re very large creatures, and they were totally unafraid of humans—they knew we had food! The sensation of them sucking the squid off my hand was one of the strangest feelings..and they would play around people’s legs and rub against them, sort of like cats!
Once we got used to them it was a lot of fun. Incredibly touristy, sure. But a remarkable experience none-the-less. :)
I very much want to swim with and interact with stingrays. I’ve hugged, pet and fed them in captivity and swam with a small wild one in Akumal, but I hear wonderful things about the ray swims in the Caymens.
jenni is awesome.
i thought swimming with sea turtles was awesome! this was so much fun. the stingrays are everywhere; i fed one a squid, and even kissed one.
At “shark alley” Off of Caye Caulker. It was great, there wee lots nurse sharks and dozens of stingrays. it was a little stressful because the water was only 5 feet deep and I was being careful not to step on any stingrays. A really big Sun Ray came as well, and that was amazing.
We went on a shore excursion to swim with Stingrays in the Cayman Islands while on a cruise. I loved it! It was awesome to feel them come up to you and slide down your leg!
I did this when I went for a holiday at Exmouth which is where the Ningaloo Reef is in Western Australia. Ningaloo Reef is an experience you should put on your things to do. You can swim out to the reef from Torquoise Bay beach. You walk down the the beach from the sand bar then swim out in the water. Then the current takes you along until you reach the sand bar which then you have to swim to the sand bar. Imagine it swimming to get out to where you want to be and then no swimming until you get to the sand bar. Magic.
About March/April you can swim with the whale sharks in Exmouth as well as snorkel and dive on the reef.
I panicked when I saw the sharks but I thought to myself they have heaps of fish there to eat why would they want to eat me.
