I did my first website about 3 years ago for a friend. Then I did my own and continued to create small sites picking up tricks along the way. Now I do it for a living. I’m totally self taught. There are so many free tutorials online that you can gain a fair degree of competency from doing them. And most designers and developers are more than willing to share their knowledge.
Any tips or advice? Steer clear of WHYSIWYG editors that focus your attention on the visual layout of the site. They can be an easy way to get something up and running quickly when you have little knowledge but it’s a blind alley where you can get stuck. Learn to write good semantic markup and cross browser css. These are the core skills. Think about what the site is for rather than how it looks.

Until I’m comfortable paying for my own hosting, I’ve set up a blog, which will more or less fill the role of a professional website.

...and am not sure i want to. on second thought, i guess that if i at least put up an online portfolio my chances of getting a pr job that includes web writing might improve greatly…let’s see if i get this city job or i will maybe work towards getting one up…maybe before i bother applying towards more jobs even…but still need to concentrate on body first!
