ejmaguireEngaging different parts of the brain

I’ve read random studies discussing the benefits of using your non dominant hand for various tasks including writing.

“Using your opposite hand will strengthen neural connections in your brain, and even grow new ones. It’s similar to how physical exercise improves your body’s functioning and grows muscles.”

I look forward to getting it to the point where it doesn’t look like a ransom note or five year old wrote it. 4 days ago

redeyedpumpkinGetting Lazy

So when I set this goal I went for 3 or 4 days practicing every morning. Now I can’t remember when last I practiced. So now there’s a new twist to this goal…
I am now gonna learn to write with my left hand by …. the end of MAY 2013!

More than eight years ago I started practicing writing with my left hand, but I never stuck with it. Thinking how good I would be right now had I stuck with it, I am now determined to keep at it this time around. 3 months ago

Lefty2012Right Handed

I am setting myself the goal of learning to write with my right hand..I am left handed & I have arthritis in my left thumb moving down to my palm, it is becoming painful to do somethings so it’s time to teach my right hand to take over.. 5 months ago

Got somme great tips fromm ScarrletRaven’s entry! There’s a sammmple of mmy ABC/abc’s in the photo. Some days are better than others. I’ve just re-read ScarrletRaven’s tips. It’s a progression and I gotta stop expecting perfection when I’ve only just begun.
I’mm pretty excited about the prospect of writing legibly with mmy left hand!!!

Vickystarting with the basics

I’ve started doing simple things with my left hand, rather than my right hand. What I’m working on right now:

1. I’ve put the mouse pad on the left hand of my computer.
2. I’m picking things up with my left hand rather than my right.
3. I’m using my left hand to drink my tea, water, etc.
4. I’m brushing my hair with my left hand.
5. I’m brushing my teeth with my left hand. 9 months ago

Faine Katres1st Day

Today I have officially started using my left hand… I’m going to start relying on my left hand a lot more to preform everyday tasks (brushing teeth, eating, etc). It’s really very suprising how deeply ingrained into the brain the right side has become. Take walking more example, I’ve noticed that I always start walking with my right foot first. I’ll have to break that habit… It’s quite awkward in the beginning, heh. I’m typing with my left hand leading the right, and I’ve even position the mouse to the left of my keyboard.

I’ve made a sort of step-by-step guide thing which will help me use and rely on my left hand more and more:

1. Use and become comfortable with the left hand (the step I’m on now)
2. Outline the basic shapes and letters of another paper using the left hand
3. Draw pictures using basic shapes (a cat with a round head and triangular ears, a square house)
4. Write the alphabet and numbers 1-100 without the use of outlining
(once all the above is mastered)
5. Write commonly-used English words and form sentences using the left hand

And from there become more and more comfortable with writing with the left hand.

A tip, for anyone else working on this goal, attempt writing The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog. It uses all the letters of the English alphabet.

Good luck to everyone working on this goal, best of luck!
