So I have wanted to be an extra just for the fun of it and if pay comes along with it then that is fine too. I just don’t know the proper channels. i know there has got to be a channel or channels!
Worth doing!
I did this for a number of years when I was working for some production base and they asked me if I was interested in making some extra cash.. so for about 5 years I worked as one during my days off and weekends.. I have to say I loved it and met some interesting people, from very experienced film extras, crews and a couple of celebs including Ethan Hawke, Robert Downey Jr, Hugh Laurie and Jeremy Irons.. and the money was a bonus.. it can be boring for some.. having to stand in the cold, repeat scenes, wear some dodgy clothes and some extras think they are stars.. but it takes allsorts and it’s definately an experience… and something everyone could do if they really wanted to give it a go.. just be wary of companies offering you work and asking for huge fees to join their casting company but most will charge you admin fees but the ones I used took it out of your first job.

It was for the movie “The Faculty” I enjoyed the experience a lot. The scene I was in was one of the football games. The energy was incredible. The only time you can see me in the final edited version is on the far right as the team rushes onto the field after a great play. I’m only in the widescreen version, lol, but it was so much fun.
Worth doing!
i was a film extra for two movies both small independent films but it was fun and getting to see them both on the silver screen was a pretty sweet reward.
Not worth it!
I was an extra for 8 months in LA.Sure it was exciting and fun BUT it is very hard to earn a living at it and scheduling makes a second job very difficult. Also most of the crew will treat you like crap. It’s not so glamorous sitting for 8-12 hours waiting or doing the same thing over and over.
Worth doing!
I was an extra for 2 movies filmed in Chicago this summer. (stranger than fiction, and The Break-up). Had a kickass time, met a lot of fun people and got to meet Emma thompson, Queen Latifa, Maggie Gillinhaul, and Vince Vaughn. (my apologies for the spelling errors in the names). I highly recommend trying it. You need to go through either an acting/modeling agency, or a casting agency. One for everyone is www.joanphilocasting.com. it may help you reach this goal if you are in the Chicago area.
