This weekend, I was pleasantly surprised by finding not one, but TWO lighthouses in the heartland of Indiana and Ohio! Went out of town with my boyfriend for a wedding he was a groomsman in, and we stayed in Celina, Ohio, which is home to Grand Lake St. Mary’s, which was the largest man-made lake in the world before the construction of Hoover Dam. Well, imagine my surprise when, while driving along the shore after leaving the reception, I spied a lighthouse in the darkness! Turns out it’s the Celina Rotary Lighthouse, mid-sized, simple but pretty. Unfortunately, I didn’t get a chance to take a picture of it, because we were leading a caravan out of town on the way home the next morning (damn country roads and us being the only ones with an atlas), and we didn’t want to make everyone behind us stop so I could play photographer. I saw it, that’s what counts! (I’ve now read that there’s a more impressive lighthouse on the lake, but it is privately owned and visible only by boat, which wasn’t on our weekend menu.)
Well, that was enough to tickle me pink, but then… our drive home to Louisville took us past Muncie, Indiana. I was reading a magazine when my beau told me to look to my right. Off the highway was a lake, and on that lake was another small lighthouse! I didn’t get a chance to get a great look at it because we were on the highway, but I think it may have been Cooper’s Lighthouse, which was built as a memorial to a man who passed away. If not… oh, well! Still an unexpected lighthouse in the middle of farm country. What a double treat to cap off my weekend!
