I’m guilty of this. Sometimes it’s just so irresistible. One of the most memorable times was when I worked for a power company not long after high school. The job was digging 2 foot/60 cm holes around the power pole so that a crew could come by a while later and treat the power pole with a weather/insect solution and rebury the exposed part of the pole. The crew consisted of 2 people-a younger guy about my age (20) and a nearly retired man (64).
At lunch time my co-worker had killed a Timber rattlesnake (9 rattles) and we got the bright idea to lay it by one of the holes we had just dug. So, after lunch we went to the last hole dug around a pole and placed the snake near the pile of dirt. We coiled it up so it would appear that it was in striking position and then partially covered it with grass.
A couple hours later we heard a strong voice come over the radio from the older guy that if we did anything like this again he would cancel work that day and we’d have to look for another job. We could hear the younger guy laughing hysterically in the background. But we talked with “Don” at the end of the day and by that time he was laughing about it, too. He said that when he saw the snake he jumped back, thinking the rattlesnake was going to strike.
I know. That was mean. Sometimes when an opportunity like this presents itself, I just can’t hold myself back. :/
