I completed my first album during last years NaSoAlMo. It wasn’t really that good, but it was a solo acoustic sort of thing, never got around to releasing it cause it’s embarassing. :[
Though about a month later I completed a noise album and a noise split and released both of those.
Now I’m on the road to making a second acoustic/folk rock album, and have a live set of my noise/experimental group recorded that I hope to count as an official release.

I first began writing music in 1988. I began recording in 1991. I became a licensed sound engineer in 1993. I filed my first copyrights with the Library of Congress in 1995. I became a member of BMI in 2003. I have put out an indie album this year and I’m in the works of releasing it on CDbaby.com
Doing everything yourself certainly boosts self-satisfaction, but it can be exhausting. There are so many ways of getting people to help you complete your album. Things you can have other people do for you:
- Have a local artist design your album cover
- Ask people not familiar with your work for their critique
- Find a local print shop and work out a deal for printing
- Ask local clubs and businesses to sponsor you
- Promote, promote and promote!
There is a lot more to it, of course. Unless you have the cash to pay for it all, investigate ways of getting funding. There are many excellent books at the library. Definitely copyright your stuff, join an affiliation (such as BMI, SOCAN, ASCAP), promote your stuff and ask for help. You’ll be surprised how many local fans will go to bat for you and lend a hand.
