How to see the Milky Way

This is related to my other star goal. I realized that I haven’t really ever seen the milky way. I guess I haven’t ever been that rural area with a clear sky that it would be possible.

But I definitely want to do this! The sooner the better. All the pollution and the lights makes this harder and harder by time…

I’ve done this… and I get to do it again when I’m back in Maine. That and see shooting stars and pick out satellites.

The “stars” around here all blink and move.

Light pollution sucks. 16 months ago

I want to do this, I want to do this so badly. I can’t explain how much I want to do this, and I can’t explain my infatuation with wanting to. I look up in the sky, and I see next to nothing. I live in an area that has so many damn lights that I can’t see anything but extremely faint ghosts of the night sky. I can’t drive myself to a place where I can, because I don’t have a license yet, and nobody who can drive will take me.

I went on a road trip, and I was told we would go camping. I was let down by night after night of motelling, and it was so frustrating when we’d be out in the middle of nowhere and the sun was setting yet it still wasn’t quite dark enough to see the stars. By the time the night came, we were in a city full of lights and it would be the same sky as home.

go somewhere near the Alpes, in France, the countryside, or better yet, in the mountains. A couple hours after sunset, once it’s good and dark, simply look up, turn your head this way or that. An enormous white smudge is surrounded by a billion billion little lights.

The quiet and enormity are moving, you’ll hear what you’ve never before. Just breathe…

it was awesome…and pretty. it was so clear too, so I just layed on a picnic table and stared at it

Very dark skies in Dumfries and Galloway in SE Scotland back in 89/90 when I was at Killy.

But... I don't understand... 3 years ago

It’s right up there. All you need to do is look up on a bright night…

Or… maybe someone lives in a place where there are NO bright nights… Hmm…

Or maybe someone expects something extraordinaire spectacular, and then the “real thing” is just a lighter part on the night sky… just a little thicker area of star dust…

Or maybe people just don’t have time to watch up ;-)

one of the amazing benefits of living in Montana for the summer was the night sky. The sky was so clear and so close. I was amazed to see it the first night and it never stopped being amazing.
