Ironically I was thinking about a related topic this morning. My computers are extensions of myself. I run Linux on all of them and am fluent in it. When I’m talking online or writing software or doing anything on a computer, I’m not thinking about keys to press; it comes as natural as speaking or walking. To put it in Cypher’s words, “I don’t even see the code. All I see is blond, brunette, redhead…”
Most everything I’ve ever made or done is stored on a hard drive or flash drive somewhere. If we are what we do, then I more or less downloaded myself into a computer a long time ago.
What’s great, however, is that I’m able to pull out of the computer, too. It’s a new skill I’ve only recently developed (see another goal of mine, “get out more”).
Forget the body it definitely has a lifetime. You can always get a new one. What makes us tick is our minds. The hardware that we need to do this doesn’t exist yet and the retreival process could take centuries. When they do figure it out though I hope to be considered one of the first time travelers
Worst case scenario? I’d have to learn all about myself by reading complex records of my previous life.
Saving the DNA to make another physical me is a no-brainer. I’d also like some bits cast into space and shot to our nearest best chance at life elswhere. I figure I could reach someplace in about 3 million light years….I’ve got a LOT of work to do.
Would that be considered cloning? And which one would be me? Both of us? Which one of us would be more real? More intelligent? More interesting?
