Ah, “The Homeland”. Well, for my family and I anyways. Italy. Italia! I’m roughly 75% Italian, even though I don’t admit to any other cultural/ethnic background. My paternal grandmother was Italian, my maternal grandfather is Sicilian, and my maternal grandmother is Napoletano. My maternal grandmothers family has a castle named after them right outside of a village near Naples. The area has been referred to as Campobasso (also known as “the outskirts of Chaves”) The castle is Castello Monforte (my grandmother’s maiden name is Monforte – and Nicola II Monforte – do your research – is my great-great-great-great-great-great grand-uncle). Both my great grandmother and my grandmother were named after his niece- Filomena Monforte.
I’ve always wanted to bring my grandmother and mother to Italy to see the castle – it’s now a national monument, open to the public, however, now with my grandmother’s declining health, I’m not sure that’s a possibility.
I have (obviously) made it a life goal for myself to go and stand in the fortress of my ancestors.
Worth doing!
The best part for me was Cinque Terre – a bit touristy but the views of the cliffs, the amazing food, and the hikes were amazing! A great first stop in Italy.
Worth doing!
Going to Italy is totally worth it. It’s not good to go ther during the summer months as it is well over 100 degrees, even early in the morning. August is the worst month to go.
I’ll go there for 3 years but it never happened ı hope one day before it sinks because of global warming
Worth doing!
It was Fab!! I saw the Sistine Chapel, St. Peters, the Colleseum, Vatican City and so much more. I CAN’T WAIT TO GO BACK!!
Gentlemoon is taking a break from 43Things.
When I visit Italy I’d like it to be a voyage of culinary exploration.
