Dear BDH: You are not a quality publication. 13 months ago

It’s just to my college newspaper, but I’m still proud of myself for doing it. Not only was the writer a terrible interviewer, but her article was just bizarre, irrelevant, and made us look bad for no reason. We’ll see if this gets published tomorrow!

    To the Editor:
I found the inclusion of the Brown Band in the article by Z.C. ’11 (“Bands’ misconduct lands them in hot water,” Oct. 15) to be somewhat misleading. The fact that the Brown Band is a scatter band as opposed to a marching band does not signify merely a difference in performance, but also a very distinct difference in culture – and as in any study of culture, generalizing can be problematic. I would have expected an article perhaps comparing our culture to that of the Princeton Band, which has been in the news lately for offending Citadel cadets, rather than to the alleged hazing culture of the UC Davis marching band. We certainly have a history of mischief among other scatter bands, but this has nothing to do with hazing. To include the Brown Band in this list of misbehaving marching bands, without any further explanation, seems to imply otherwise.

I am a big mouth complainer 2 years ago

And have written several letters to the editor.
Because I tend to flame others in my letters, they always have been published.

Then I get flamed right back.

Humour & seriousness 2 years ago

I once wrote to the Editor when they discontinued my favourite comic strip. I am proud to say that a translated version of For Better or for Worse still appears in our daily paper.

More recently I responded about something more serious, and my letter was published. I hope it makes a difference.

Do this goal alllll the time...... 2 years ago

Maybe I do this goal a bit too often. I need to keep up my “crazy old lady” status though.

One time I wrote a LTTE about the scary parking garage at our local hospital. The letter was printed. A columnist from another newspaper took my LTTE and printed it in his column. The original newspaper re-printed my LTTE in other editions. My LTTE also ended up in a blog. Of course, nothing about the scary parking garage ever changed, but at least I felt better and knew that I had done my civic duty.

Of course, I have an opinion about everything. I’d like to think everyone does. But, at some point we should feel strong enough about something to make others listen. This is a good way to get your point across without having to listen to others. It’s okay to not listen to other opinions sometimes. Just make sure you’ve got your ducks in a row.

1 got published 2 years ago

I’ve written several, but one to Mary Engelbreit’s newsletter got published. sigh…so cool.

Letter approved and sent. Blew way past the word limit, but perhaps they’ll publish it as an opinion column instead. :)

I need to respond to a specific article that has some misleading information.
