Thanks to KittyCutts’ suggestion, I’ve created an iGoogle homepage so I can get headlines from BBC, NPR, and New York Times each day. Its helpful because I can quickly see what the top stories are, read a brief summary, and then go directly to the longer article when I want more clarity.
I also find myself paying more attention to when I listen to NPR these days. While there’s always room for improvement, I may check this goal off soon.

Each week I try to read Times and Forum but sometimes I don’t manage to and I want to read each and every issue. I would also like to add Le Point to the list. I should watch the news daily, for the time being in French and when I’m ready in Italian.

So, there is definitely room for improvement for me here. I pick up majority of my news on NPR during my five mile commute to work. (And yes I confess, I’ll pick up a bit here and there from Jon Stewart as well.)
I’m trying to change this, and I’ve started watching interviews and speeches of the candidates and learn more about the issues in the US presidential election.
Still I could do better. There is so much going on in the whole world, and with the economy and the environment, that regardless of the election outcome that I should be aware of. (I have a tendency to want to stay interested in things for a brief period of time once every four years, which isn’t enough.)
I’d like to get learning about news from different sources to be part of my daily routine.

It’s hard to keep up with everything that is going on. Lately I’ve been making a habit of reading two weekly newspapers and Newsweek cover to cover. It’s not as good as reading a paper daily I suppose, but I feel a little more informed.

Sometimes I am just so overwhelmed with the work I have to do for the week (or should I say lack of), I just concentrate on my own current events as opposed to the world. I guess its kind of selfish of me and thats why I want to do this.

But I’m going to get back into it. I’m trying to get prepared for the US presidential elections. I want to find out more about the candidates than is on the flyers they always put out.

But I’m at least starting to listen to more NPR again while driving. Gotta start somewhere.

Because I do think it is important to know what’s going on around you – as well as in other parts of the world. It is so easy to get caught up in just your community’s problems, those of your family etc.
The one problem I’m having is NOT reading the paper in the morning. I’ve found that there is often enough “depressing” news that I can’t really stand to start my day off that way. I need to find another time day to read the news. I also want to check a variety of sources from around the world for different perspectives.
