How I did it: I just made the commitment and signed up. Even though it's going to be tough not having that extra money, it needed to be done in order to retire! I signed up through my company who matches up to 7%. It was an easy online process. Lessons & tips: The sooner you do it the better. If you're never used to having that extra money then you won't even think about it. I waited four years, and now it seems much more drastic.

I’ve been an active component of the workforce for nearly two years and moved into this place a year and a half ago. I think it’s time I signed up. I don’t know what I haven’t. I know it’s important, but I just haven’t been able to get interested all these past months.
Hopefully this goal will soon be replaced with either “maintain my 401k” or “max out my 401k.” Or something to that extent.
I’m only 21, but this is something that people should start early. I’ve heard all the statistics about the financial standing for those approaching retirement and it scares me. I believe less that 15% of those retiring actually have enough money to carry them through retirement, but don’t quote me on that. I don’t want to have to worry about it comes time for me to retire. So if I start a 401K now, I will be able to retire at a decent age and not need to go back to work after retirement; that’s the idea anyway.
New sneakers … check. Bottled water … check. Oh, a 401k isn’t a race? Oops, wrong goal. Kidding. But doing this may be a marathon for me since I have a low tolerance for boring paperwork. I’ll try to toughen up.
I’m the only person I know with a job and no 401k, I’m just trying to get out of debt first.
