How to play tennis"Tennis is a great form of exercise, and also a fun social activity (especially doubles)."
How I did it: I started playing with my husband in July 2008, and by the end of the year I started playing in singles leagues at my local park. Thanks to a sub request from someone in the doubles league, I found that I enjoyed doubles as well, and am now playing in both singles and doubles each season. Lessons & tips: Remember that tennis is a mental game, as well as physical. When playing singles, it's just you against your opponent. No coaches or teammates. So you have to stay positive and focused on your own. Resources: Fuzzy Yellow Balls |

How I did it: I went and got a lesson once a week for about three weeks after not having played for twenty years and then I joined a social comp, playing once a week. I thought it would be like riding a bike. It was not. My team and I finished on the bottom of the ladder but we had so much fun. I am starting to improve a little, but my age is not making it any easier. I spend a lot of time laughing at myself because I think I have still got it, and I h… Read how I did it…

How I did it: I signed up for tennis lessons about 2 years ago, and have improved a lot. The lessons were weekly, and very easygoing... no stress at all. I'm not looking to be the next Olympian tennis player, I just like to know the basics so I can practice on my own from there. Read how I did it…

I played an intense doubles game last weekend, by far the highest level I have played at in over two years. My body really suffered afterwards, but while I was doing it it was SO MUCH FUN!

I played pretty well considering it’s been over 2 years since I played at that level. I lost 9-6. He went 3-0 up by breaking me early, but then I broke back to make it 6-5… and then my legs went :)
Things to work on:
1. Fitness – this’ll make the most difference
2. Tactics – I lacked confidence and didn’t attack his serve
3. Technique – got to get my topspin backhand going again
Great fun.

My next match was cancelled because the other guy was injured – so I have somehow stumbled into the semi-final. It’s the number 1 seed next. In a weird way I hope I lose – that will mean there are better players than me at the club and I can get better. If I win, well… I’ll celebrate my return to fitness, but that’s not why I started to play again!

It’s been nearly three weeks – I’ve had three deep massages and I’ve done daily exercises with those crazy rubber bands – I’m ready to try again!

But I’m not injured! I’m not injured!!

Dusted off the rackets and got to practice Tennis with the kids on the handball courts at Cerritos College. The tennis courts were under construction, but it was just as easy to play against the wall. In fact, my son outplayed me and was quick to rub it in. We all had fun and it was a good time.
