Jen feels bold and somewhat brave.
For the record: I’ve ridden both Western and English on experienced, older “bombproof” horses and a pony. I had an understanding, patient instructor and one who was impatient and screamed at me constantly. I was never in or witnessed a riding accident. But the “What ifs” freaked me out so much that I stopped riding.
I still love horses. I enjoy petting and grooming them—just not riding them!

And tomorrow is my second lesson. My legs are hurt and the horse wasn’t so esay to ride. It’s going to be better. My children’s dream finaly begins to come true.

I found someone at church who would like to take horseback riding lessons, so we talked about doing this together. My possible instructor was back at church today with a brace on her wrist following surgery. So now maybe I want to do this again!

The woman I hoped to have as an instructor was thrown from her horse when a mountain lion happened by. so she is out for awhile. She broke her wrist badly and had to have surgery. A teacher friend of mine, also an experienced rider and horse owner, was also recently thrown from her horse, which then fell on her. She has two broken collar bones and a lot of pain. Is the universe trying to tell me something??

Riding lessons
I’ve taken, take, and instruct horseback riding lessons. I’ve been riding for about 16 yrs. I’m currently giving lessons in Brownsburg, Indiana and if anyone’s nearby the charge is $30/hr. Generally lasting an hr.
Anyway, for those of you seeking an instructor, I’d suggest going out, meeting them, and watching them give a lesson. There are numerous things you can do with it – showing, trail riding, roping, working cows, barrel racing, etc – and you need to decide which discipline you prefer, english or western. Also talk to other people at the facility, see if they have an opinion on the instructor (other instructors might just be in it for the money to get you as a student, so talk to students or boarders).
The first few lessons can be frustrating and “slow” – you’re getting used to your instructor, the horse, and all the new things you now have to do. So don’t be discouraged at first, the basics in riding take a long time to achieve and a lifetime to master.

One of my goals is to lose 80ish pounds. Well, when I reach 50 pounds lost I will pursue this goal. It will give me something to work for, and look forward to.
