How I did it: My sister was studying abroad there, so in my time off this summer I decided to just go! I bought my ticket in May and went in August. It was very affordable once I got there, and I spent very little. I also contacted a few places ahead of time to visit, like a school for street children and an elephant retirement camp. The biggest expense is the plane ticket, but once you’re there, you can do it! It is affordable! Most of the towns and cities had auto rickshaws that cost less than a dollar to go a long way. Food was cheap, as was lodging. If you know someone who is staying there, figure out a way to visit. You will save on lodging and have someone to help you feel more comfortable in a new and different place.
harrietelizabeth Why do you build me up, Buttercup baby?
Maybe. This was gonna happen in between grad school and vet school, but lately we’ve been talking about China or South America instead. China is where the man wants to teach english for a year while I’m in vet school, so good to check the place out. South America would give us a chance to practice all the college spanish classes we’ve had and get to know the language better. So we’ll see.

harrietelizabeth Why do you build me up, Buttercup baby?
Since its where I plan to retire one day, I thought I ought to maybe check the place out first. The summer before I start vet school is when I’ll be going, maybe for a honeymoon?
by a guy I met in the summer who was so passionate about India, I couldn’t help but be infected by his enthusiasm.
I haven’t done any serious travelling for 10 years, and I think its about time. I sooooo need a break from work, and I the idea of immersing myself in a completely new culture and from what I’ve been told India is a complete assault on your senses!
Money wise I’ll need to save and realistically this will probably take a year to put aside enough money to go away with and enough to come back to.

My son and I went to Bangalore for a week, then to Nagarhole Wildlife Preserve, Kodagu (Orange County), and Mysore for another week. It was soo very different and so exciting. I loved the temples, animals, people, jasmine, food!!!, and watching how people get by when they just don’t have all the modern conveniences. People for the most part are slim and eat a healthy diet. It’s just so different I could go on all day. We were lucky enough to witness a traditional wedding.
If you get a chance, you must go.
It is totally worth it. I would recommend taking the time and making the effort to “give back” in some way…visit an orphanage, a school, find some way to volunteer and help.
If you can’t do the above, you simply MUST take the time to talk to the people of India….they can be very warm, very loving, and they seem to speak from the heart…but are very honest..sometimes brutally so..lol
Just watch out for hockers…if you are on a big tourist bus or something, hockers are at every stop…you’ll get used to them though and can get some pretty cool souvenirs for loved ones that way.
Jake It's Hot in Australia!! >.<" lol
