So, we went hiking with Daniel yesterday to Bagby…
And, beforehand, we did a little research about Chantrelle mushrooms (what they look like, what false ones look like, how to harvest them, etc.).
So, as we hiked we scoped out the forest floor for anything that looked like it might be one and, we found some!
Andrew found most, but I found one, too!
It was really fun and we’re really excited to go out again for a trip focused on mushroom hunting!
(the pic is the one I found)

Sounds gross but its actually kind of cool. In any case we need a new shower curtain. But how amazing that mushrooms spores got into our bathroom and were just waiting for the right amount of moisture!

My father took my sister and I mushroom picking one day – it was just in the fields around my house, but at the time (I was about 6), it was the furthest I’d ever walked from the house and it felt like we were off on some great journey! We picked lots of mushrooms, and kept them all together by threading them onto the stalks of dandelions. I’d like to do this again, but I know it wouldn’t feel as exciting or special if I did it now…there are some times you can’t recapture.

I got to go mushroom hunting this morning with Claire and her daughters, Emma and Rose
The “ancestral” grounds had been partly demolished by “construction,” likely new homes whose residents will no doubt plant trees in these vacant lots, completing the circle of irony. Despite this, we identified chanterelles (shown above, to be eaten for dinner), puffballs, jack o’lanterns and russulas.
Thanks, Claire!

I’ve invited Jim Carson.
It hasn’t rained in a long time, so I don’t know what we’ll find. I plan to go up to the “ancestral” hunting grounds outside of North Bend, see what we can find.
